Admantine
Properties
Material Characteristics
Adamantine is a white, reflective metal. It is slightly warm and squishy to the touch while it is growing, but once it has been severed from the stem it cools and hardens over the course of fourteen days.
Physical & Chemical Properties
The metal grows. While still attached to the "stem," the substance grows at the rate of 1 inch every year. Needless to say, adamantium is very rare and very highly prized.
After it has been severed from the stem, the metal hardens. It is said that the armor never dents, and always stays clean. It is also water-repelling. The metal is widely considered to be the strongest in the world.
Compounds
When adamantine is diluted with elven silver, it forms a weaker metal; mithral. Mithral retains some of adamantium's hardness and durability, but is greatly diluted. However, it is much lighter and can be used as a spellcasting focus due to the addition of elven silver.
Geology & Geography
Adamantium groves can only be found in Teraveld. The people who live there grow it, but will only give it to an outsider who proves their worth in "the Gauntlet." Of course, there are also ancient suits of armor that have existed since the Arillian Empire, but the location of these have been lost.
Origin & Source
The Adamantium Fungus grows Adamantium. The fungus will only grow in Teraveld; the conditions for its growth cannot be met anywhere else.
Life & Expiration
Adamantium holds its properties for as long as anyone can recall. No instances of adamantium degrading have occurred naturally, but this does not mean it is not possible.
History & Usage
History
Adamantium has existed since the Arillian Empire and possibly before. It was originally used as armor, but later the Arill discovered they could make it into ships and buildings.
Discovery
No one knows when Adamantium was discovered.
Everyday use
Adamantium is only used among members of the upper class. Even then, they might only have an adamantium dagger. Only those who find or commission one from Teraveld have a suit of the biometal.
Refinement
The Adamantium Fungus will be placed in a special box that creates the exact shape of the piece of equipment needed. As the biometal grows, it fills the crate and forms the shape intended.
Environmental Impact
Without being confined to a box, adamantine grows along the ground, blocking any plant life from sprouting.
Distribution
Trade & Market
The people of Teraveld exclusively sell Adamantium. When it is resold, a suit of armor can sell for upwards of 60,000 gold pieces.
Storage
You could store Adamantine in lava and recover it later.
