Mechane’s Skin
When Mechane, the Titan of Machines, first rose and attempted to scale to the top of Kettis, millions of people were terrified. A Titan, one of the horrid creatures banished over two millennium ago, had made itself known to the world for the first time. Questions covered the world; Does this mean the Titans are returning to Sacrine? Will there be another Titanomachy? How did a new Titan form and how do we protect the world?
However, there were a smaller sect of people who saw this Titan, a sleek mass of machinery moving in perfect motion, shining with image magics no mortal could even comprehend, and thought “we can use this…”
Mechane’s skin is a thick sheet metal, carved from the restrained body of the Titan itself. When cut from the Titan’s body, the wound grows back slowly, making the metal a seemingly infinitely reproducible material. The metal is anomalous when compared to other metals, seeming to be an impossible alloy of copper, steel, gold, mythral, orichalcum, and some unknown material. Because of this strange mix, the metal is extremely light, conducts magical energy extremely efficiently, and does not tarnish. Beyond that, despite its strange mixture of properties, it can be heated and forged, allowing for the smithing of items out of it.
Unfortunately, the heat needed to bring the metal to a malleable state is too high for a regular blacksmith to attain, and even well established blacksmiths with advanced forges can’t use the metal due to its high melting point. Only a few forges in the world, all located in El, have the ability to forge with the material.
There is, however, another hurtle. While it is true that Mechane’s Skin works well to create enchanted items, most metallic weaponry made from it would have the same enchantability as a weapon made with mythral or orichalcum. Combined with the need for nearly double the heat, this makes weaponry made with Mechane’s Skin an unviable endeavor unless the weapon was used as a spellcasting focus as well.
Wands, staffs, and any type of re-producible wondrous items that utilize Mechane’s Skin have their spellcasting abilities enhanced. All spells cast using the item are cast at a level higher than their base level at no extra charge, and the items recharge twice as fast as they normally would.
Items that don’t have spellcasting abilities gain the added effect of a Ring of Spell Storing with 5 slots of storage.
Any weapons or shields made with Mechane’s Skin that don’t have spellcasting abilities become spellcasting focuses and, when attuned, give the wielder proficiency in the weapon if they have the ability to cast spells on their own. All strength requirements for two-handed-weapons remain the same, and the weapon has the effect of a Ring of Spell Storing with three slots of storage. They can also be enchanted to have another basic effect (ex: Flametongue)
Armor made with the Skin has a similar properties to weapons. When attuned to, the wearer gains proficiency with the armor. The properties of the metal also give the armor certain attributes depending on what kind of armor is created:
- Chain Shirt: Resistance to Piercing Damage
- Scale Mail & Spiked Armor: Resistance to Bludgeoning Damage
- Breastplate & Half Plate: Resistance to Slashing Damage
- Ring Mail: Raises Move Speed by 10ft
- Chain Mail: Advantage on Stealth Checks Instead of Disadvantage
- Splint: Advantage on Strength and Constitution Saves and Checks
- Plate Mail: Invulnerability to Critical Hits and Resistance to Slashing, Piercing, and Bludgeoning Damage
Beyond that, the armor can be further enchanted with basic magical effects
While using Mechane’s Skin to enhance already existing magical items on its own is a marvel, there are even more properties of the material that allow for new creations. Its ability to Chanel magical energy has made it the source of study for a group who wishes to create programmable mechanical hominids.
