In Memoriam
"Pages burn. Throats choke. Murals crumble to dust. But memories... memories leave a stain."
In Memoriam
Wonderous Item, Artifact, Requires Attunement
This amulet, shaped like a teardrop and shining with a dim purple light, attunes its wearer's mind and soul to the plane of memories. While attuned to this amulet, the wearer gains resistance to psychic damage and gain advantage on history checks. The wearer is also immune to memory altering effects of any kind, such as the Modify Memory spell, and any effects that would have altered their memories in the past are removed. In addition, the amulet has 10 charges, regaining 1d6 + 4 at sunrise. These charges can be used for a number of spells and other effects.
Spells
At any point in time, In Memoriam can be used to cast these spells instantly, given that it has enough charges: Encode Thoughts (1 charge), Encrypt/Decrypt (2 charges), Identify (3 charges), Protection from Energy (psychic only) (5 charges).
Dreamwalker
While asleep, the amulet sinks into the mind, uncovering the lives of the wearer's ancestors. After being attuned to In Memoriam for ten days, the wearer can expend a charge as an action to gain proficiency in one skill, instrument, or tool for one hour.
The wearer can do this as many times as they have charges for, but can only have one extra proficiency/expertise at a time. If they choose to take a new proficiency before the time has passed, they lose the old proficiency in favor of the new one.
Dispel Deceit
As an action, the wearer of the amulet can touch a creature, expending 3 charges to dispel any mind altering magic effecting it. The dispelling acts as a 3rd level Dispel Magic or Remove Curse, and if the effect afflicting the creature is of a 4th or higher level spell, the wearer will need to roll a wisdom check of 10 + the spell's level in order to dispel it.
Forgotten Memories
While journeying around the world, adventurers may stumble upon forgotten places, or enter towns with secrets buried deep. In places like this, where the truth of what has happened has been forgotten by all except the world itself, In Memoriam glows brighter. The closer to the source of a forgotten memory the wearer is, the more the amulet will glow, until it flashes with a brilliant light. The wearer is transported into the memory, a passive observer of the moment that left its stain on the world. When the memory is over, the maximum charges of In Memoriam increase by 1 to a maximum of 20 charges.
Remembrance
When In Memoriam increases its maximum level of charges, its power grows with the energy of minds long forgotten-
- 11 Charges: Dispel Deceit becomes 4th level
- 12 Charges: The proficiency bonus from Dreamwalker lasts twice as long
- 13 Charges: Dispel Deceit becomes 5th level and In Memoriam regains 1d8 + 4 charges at sunrise
- 14 Charges: Spell List Expansion; Trick Question (3 charges), Ashen Memories (4 charges), Iron Mind (6 charges)
- 15 Charges: Resistance to Psychic Damage becomes Immunity
- 16 Charges: Dispel Deceit becomes 6th level and In Memoriam regains 1d10 + 6 charges at sunrise
- 17 Charges: When using Dreamwalker, the wearer can expend three extra charges to gain Expertise instead of Proficiency
- 18 Charges: Spell List Expansion; Legend Lore (6 charges), Extract Knowledge (8 charges), Mind Blank (15 charges)
- 19 Charges: Dispel Deceit becomes 7th level and In Memoriam regains 1d12 + 8 charges at sunrise
- 20 Charges: Dispel Deceit gains the added ability to show the wearer and the target who/what caused the mind alteration
OPTIONAL RULE: If the GM so chooses, In Memoriam can gain additional benefits depending on the memory seen. For example, if a memory shows a man being burned at the stake, the GM can add the bonus benefit of Protection from Energy granting fire damage rather than just psychic.
Origin
"Why... Why... Please somebody help us. I don't want to be forgotten.
When In Memoriam reaches its maximum strength, the tear will begin to pulse, drawing the wearer to a dark alleyway in Aviso. There, now that they are a trusted keeper of forgotten knowledge, they will finally be shown the artifact's creation.
