If ever you encounter an area where magic fluctuates around a full mile and there is no wildlife, run away, for you have stumbled on the den of a Devourer. These magnificent if terrifying creatures feast on magic itself, making them one of the Apex predators of this world. To hunt one is to court death itself and pray it will be merciful while knowing the worst horrors are about to be visited upon you. - Kallista
Devourers are both finite and infinite, for they cannot truly be killed. Each time a mortal kills one the blood of the creature(literally concentrated liquid magic) will corrupt and turn the slayer into a devourer. Legends claim there are 12 existing at all times though some believe there might actually be more in slumber. They maintain the delicate balance of the unstable magic of the world, feasting on wild magic where it concentrates and becomes too unstable in order to return the region to a proper habitat. This process is slow, taking centuries to perform, and every time a devourer gets slain by would be heroes, the world pays the price for their arrogance. To note, any weapon that bathes in the life blood of a devourer will gain the power to even injure a god, while any shield or armor will conversely protect one from a god's wrath, however these artifacts will gain a will of their own, in so doing perpetuating the cycle of life and rebirth devourers symbolize.
Of special note, it is rumored the first paladins noted the vast magic that devourers feasted and processed within them and gave them the idea to perform similar acts in order to better serve the world, this led to their use of liquid cryselia as a means to ingest magic and serve their purpose as protectors.
