The setting of this campaign is somewhat based on 1930s New York. It is a massive city and a cultural and racial melting pot. As society is pushed into a massive economic spiral and fascist rhetoric becomes more and more common, the friction between these disparate groups increases. Orks were the original dominant species on the planet. They evolved to survive in a primordial Earth, however Elves and Humans fell into the realm a little over a thousand years before the start of the campaign (972 AD). They were better adapted to the climate of the planet as it had outpaced the evolution of the Orks. On top of that, they brought with them a powerful resource, magic. Other races do exist on the planet, but are less common than Humans, Elves, and Orks. Following the addition of Elves and Humans to the world (The First Interplanar Collision) there were 400 years of war (972-1379 AD). Elves and Humans brought much of their cultures and conflicts with them into their new home. Collaboration between the races was (and in most places still is) incredibly rare, instead most vied for control of land for their own group. Humans grew to be the dominant group due to their combination of magical ability and industrious nature, but Orks and Elves still held a significant amount of land. <Note: Orks had it the worst out of these groups by far, but their warlike nature kept them safe from being conquered> Soon however, the land was overflowing with people, and all the great empires looked to expand their borders. This threatened a new era of total war, however the discovery of a new continent, the Occidental Isola, allowed free expansion (1488 AD). The native species, the Arakocra, lived in tall trees and were mostly unbothered by the expansion, for the time anyways. Old world hatreds turned into new world conflicts. As the empires expanded onto the Isola, claims for land erupted new conflicts. The colonial wars threatened to sink the expansion project altogether. The colonial groups were thrown against each other under the command of their empires who wanted total control of the Occident (1550-1700 AD) Tiring of the conflict, commoner groups of the different races began to meet and plan an insurrection against the old world empires. Under the half elf/half ork noble Jeylin Adreiele the old Empires' power was overthrown in the new world, being unable to fight against the collaboration of the commoner races, and being unwilling to cooperate with each other. The nation of the Occident was formed under Minister Andreiele, who instituted a system of democracy in an attempt to equalize the races (1713 AD). However, being willing to cooperate in the revolution did not mean that the prejudices had died. Races usually cloistered in their own communities. Cross-race towns existed, but rarely did they exist by choice and even rarer without conflict. The nation expanded across the country, pushing out of the area of the Arakocra and into the region of the fallen Arakocra, the Kenku. Lacking the tall trees present on the eastern side of the island, this species had evolved to lose their wings and instead became adept, stealthy hunters. Many battles were fought between the settlers and the Kenku, but the nation's magic and advanced weaponry proved too much for the Kenku. The Arakocra joined in the battle due to long and sour ties to the Kenku. The Kenku civilizations were razed to the ground in the wake of westward expansion. This cooperation helped bring Arakocra into the fold of the nation, being granted citizenship and territorial rights. The ending of these wars against the Kenku tribes came at the same time of the first minister, Jeylin Adreiele. Following her death the nation was sent into turmoil <1781>. Most had looked at the idea of democracy as only existing within their own communities, and now with the death of the Minister the question of interracial democracy was raised. The second minister, Calvin Waltimer, was elected a full year after the death of Andreiele. This time saw infighting between the races in many areas, but also newfound cooperation in some as the advent of a national democracy saw the light of day. Finally, when the election took place the Humans held a domineering lead in the polls due to their high population. Calvin Waltimer was a humanist, and he quickly began ensuring the supremacy of the human population of the Occident. He pushed the nation towards civil war by actively persecuting the minority populations. Eventually the races banned together and the Occidental Civil War was fought (1810 AD). It was the bloodiest conflict waged in centuries, but eventually Waltimer and his southern Human states were defeated. He was deposed and executed for his crimes (1823 AD). <Note: Not all humans fought on the side of Waltimer, just southern Humanists. Many humans actually migrated north during this time, some settling in the region that would become Andreiele City> Following the defeat of Waltimer, Allisandre Findele was elected as the third minister. An elf, she was elected by the equalists in a bid to restore the spirit of the nation. <Note: The Southern Human States were not permitted to vote in this election, causing it to go down as controversial. Racists cite it and blame Findele for many of their hardships to this day, although the validity of that is questionable> She sought to emphasize cooperation amongst the races, and saw the best way to do this being industrialization. She deconstructed the races into classes, seeing it as a way to communalize the separate peoples into one proletariat class. She did not want to liberate them from this state mind you, just unify them within it. Her ideology mirrored closely that which was forming and solidifying in the old world. Communism. Her attempt to unify the races not only in an economic sense, but the physical sense was Andreiele City (1849). Formed with diversity in mind, it saved space and thought for each of the races. In her mind, the collaboration of the races on this level had never been seen before, and if successful would likely become the most prosperous city on the planet. A diversity of skills, abilities, ideologies, and personalities caught fire and the industry of Andreiele City became the most successful in the world. It became the capitalist hub for the world, having a stranglehold over entertainment, fashion, industry, and innovation. This did not come without its faults, however. The living standard of the workers was greatly diminished, and those who believed in the dream of a united proletariat under Findele became disillusioned. Andreiele was shot and killed by an Anarchist Radical following her endorsement of a local human mobster, Illanius Modele, for mayor of Andreiele (1877). <Note: Modele went on to win due to Andreiele's martyrdom and cracked down hard on both communists and unions. > She died a true liberal hero, despised by both the far left and far right. At this same time, in the old world a second dimensional merge took place (The Second Interplanar Collision) (1877 AD). This time numerous races and creatures joined the realm. Many of these new races quickly began immigrating to the Occident in order to escape the turmoil that now consumed the old world. The old world broke from being three large empires to being three medium empires and many small nation states, most of which compromised of individual races. Some races collaborated however, and many states began seeing themselves long nationalistic lines instead of purely racial ones. Alliances were drawn and now the old world is tied up in a net which would unravel at a single snip of the clippers. Minister Mikael Frankel took power in the Occident. He planned to further the agenda of his predecessor, but a threat in the west derailed his plans. The Kenku Rebellion (1878 AD) began claiming territory in the western regions claiming it to be their ancestral right. The Occidental Army set out to quell the rebellion, reducing the Kenku population to a handful. The genocide muddied Frankel's ministerial reign from the beginning. He decided to sit on his hands for the rest of his presidency until the Old World War (later renamed the Interisolary war following the Occident joining the conflict) (1914). The alliances finally hit a tipping point and massive, total war broke out overseas. The Occident stayed out of the conflict until Frankel's blunder. Affectionately called that, Frankel drunkenly called his old war allies and pledged his support. This mistake led to the Occident's involvement in the war, and several thousand dead Occidental troops. Frankel was reclusive for the rest of his tenure. Many called for his resignation, but he did not listen. Things did improve for the nation however. The post-war boom applied in many ways. Children, industry, culture and more all saw major spikes. For a time anyways. The old world falls deeper into turmoil as a depression swallows the world. The Orkish empire, defeated in the Interisolary War, has began an ultranationalist transformation that has sent waves of fascist sentiment around the globe. Likewise, the newly founded Socialist Equalist Empire has increased a rise in leftwing radicalism across the globe. The Minister died earlier this year. The nation is in a state of turmoil. Andreiele City, the hub for interracial cooperation is now a powder keg waiting for a match. With socialist and fascist ideals swirling on top of the racial animosity that forms at the end of each Minister's time, all it would take is one straw to send Andreiele City into chaos.
