Narbonensis
The Narbonensis consist of three Goblinoid Tribes ruled by a single king.
The Gallica Tribe are Hobgoblin fishermen and sailors, adept at sea travel and navigation. They live on the northern tip of the peninsula. In addition to their naval prowess, they are known for their use of the Phalanx, and their shock troops, the Pataari, a group of ogres that are famed for their above-average intelligence.
The Pocti are Goblin shepherds and farmers, but they are feared for the might of their cavalry. They live in the central parts of the peninsula, sharing the highlands with herds of wild horses and flocks of sheep.
The Jaqari are Bugbear Hunter-Gatherers. A semi-nomadic lifestyle turned them into potent merchants and mercenaries as they travelled between the various settlements that propagate the peninsula.
The Narbonensis secluded themselves on the Alesian peninsula after a tragedy known as the “Red Night”, an incident some fifteen hundred years ago on the mainland that forced the survivors of the once powerful city-state of Narbo into a tribal existence. Nearly all record of this tragedy is lost, including the location of Narbo itself, as well as what caused the fall of the ancient city in the first place.
At the age of thirteen, every male member of the Narbonensis tribes undergoes a trial known as a Blooding. This trial determines their starting place in their military hierarchy. It consists of the young tribesman going into the wilderness for up to a month, during which time he must kill an animal the tribe acknowledges as stronger than him. The more creatively the kill is made, the higher the position rewarded.
The three tribes of The Narbonensis are mainly semi-nomadic, travelling between settlements during different times of the year, though that is not to say they lack permanent settlements. Each of the three tribes possess a permanent capital.
Jakkari, is the City Of The Horsemaster, and is the permanent capital of the Pocti. It is famed for the massive tomb built for the military commander the city takes it’s name from, Jakkari The Swift, who supposedly held back a demonic tide shortly after the exodus from Narbo.
Caartagos is the capital of the Gallica, a highly populated port city on the very tip of the Alesian Peninsula. Originally an outpost built by Ancient Narbo, Caartagos is defended by sheer white cliffs on two sides, and the sea on one, while the ancient Caarthan Wall built by Narbo guards the south.
Chogoris is the capital of the Jaqari, a reclaimed citadel carved out of Mount Akkena by the ancient Dwarves. Ruled by the Mercen Council, Chogoris is the most heavily defended of the Narbonensis Capitals, and as a result holds nearly all of the accumulated wealth of the Three Tribes. The ancient Dwarven citadel also functions as the seat of the Narbonensian High King.
The Narbonensis King is chosen through a council called upon the death of the previous King, known as A Council of Twelve. At this meeting the four representatives sent by of the tribes debate on which Tribe King to elect as the next King of the Narbonensis, before a vote is called, and the Shamans are asked for the opinions of the Gods. Religions practiced on the Alesian Peninsula tend to focus around either Combat, Hunting, The Sea, or the worship of Nature. As a result Nature deities such as Mielikki, Chauntea, and Silvanus are extremely popular, along with deities like Tyr, Tempus, and Malar.
