Dimensions Overview
An Introduction from the Astral Scholars
Our current understanding of dimensions is somewhat limited. We've been able to communicate with some of the visiting beings from other dimensions and learn about them and their dimensions. Some have even given us a history of how they first came into contact with other. But, as one might expect, the information is incomplete and often conflicting. Despite this, we have developed consistent terminology describing what we know and have formed several theories about the dimensions, the various dimensional beings, and how they interact with us — and why.
Our universe is composed of dimensions. These are not simply alternate realities. In fact, a dimension may or may not have its own alternate realities. But instead, dimensions are somewhat like parallel universes each with their own unique combination of metaphysical attributes. Many of the dimensions produce numen, beings manifesting or capable of using various dimensional abilities. Most numen can travel between dimensions, but have limited abilities unless possessing a host or attached to other anchoring devices.
Our dimension, the one that humans (as well as other sapient species) inhabit, is named Endeavor, and the numen of Endeavor are called Competitors. It would seem that each dimension has an overriding characteristic that applies to its numina. Endeavor is also one of the few natural host dimensions which produces beings with the ability to become hosts for numina from other dimensions, allowing the numen to survive, flourish, and utilize their full dimensional abilities (outside their own native dimension).
Only a tiny percentage of Endeavor's inhabitants are considered numen or numin-ken — beings manifesting or capable of using dimensional abilities. A greater, yet still quite small, percentage can function as hosts. And among the known sapient species in Endeaver, humans have the largest percentage of numina and hosts.
These factors have made Endeavor the current battleground of the numen competing for control of all of the dimensions. And, unfortunately for us, Ruartei Space seems to be the center of this dimensional war. As far as we can determine, this is because our area of space has the highest concentration of humans (which can function as hosts) and the largest number of ways for traveling to and from Endeavor.
Fortunately, most inhabitants of Ruartei are not aware of this war or even that dimensions exist. Of course, many leaders and informed elite of the Elder Worlds and the Grand Society are aware of this, but it's not generally discussed or mentioned. There's no need to alarm the general populace about something that rarely affects them since skirmishes are uncommon. Any conflicts that spill over into the public awareness are explained away as some rare type of natural phenomena.
Please note that we, the Astral Scholars, continue to gather information and refine our theories about the dimensions, the numen, and their dimensional war. Updates and revisions are distributed to key strategists and leadership only if specifically requested. Also note that we are aware that there are numina and their human allies who have additional knowledge that they may not have shared with us.
