The Brood of Eggs
I walked down the quiet hallway of the abandoned lab. The only sound was the flickering lights above my head and the slight squelching sound my feet made in the green goo that covered every surface in this dreadful place. It squished in between my toes, slimy and cold, yet there was no scent to the stuff. I was confused about how it got onto the walls and even on the ceilings. Not to mention, it seemed to move if I looked at it for too long. I didn't want to think about it for too long as I stumbled down what seemed like an endless corridor. My eyes hurt from all the flickering as they tried to adjust. I was cold in the tattered remains of clothes, and my memory was hazy. Why was I in this lab? I felt myself falling from the little energy I had left, leaving my body. Before I could hit the ground, something soft and warm caught me. The last thing I saw was green before I passed out.
The first thing I felt when I came to was a thick, warm substance wrapped around me. My face was the only thing not covered. It was almost like it was cradling me and holding me against the wall. I opened my eyes and gasped as I looked around the room I was now in. The smashed equipment and green goo covering everything were not what I focused on first; instead, it was the brood of eggs scattered around the main room. They were clustered in pods, and the green goo was so thin that I could see them moving inside. I couldn't move because of the green goo wrapped around my body, but even if it weren't there, the exhaustion would have stopped me from going anywhere. I was panicking, but couldn't do anything about it. I went to open my mouth, but a tendril of goo covered it again. I heard a voice whispering in my head, telling me it wouldn't hurt me and only wanted to help, that I was like it — a tool for the lab to use, but no more. We were free!
