Duke/Duchess
The duke or duchess is the eldest member of a high-ranking noble family, ruling over a duchy, which is a large geographical area within a nation. Often among the most powerful figures in the land, they wield great political and military power. They are expected to keep and maintain a levy of troops to bring to the monarch’s aid when summoned. The title is hereditary.
Duties
As a duke or duchess, you have the following duties and obligations:
Answer any royal summons promptly.
Approve treaties and agreements between nobles.
Keep the peace among your vassals for the stability of the land.
Pay taxes or tithes.
Produce an heir for the stability of the family line.
Put the needs of your duchy above your own.
See to the defence and management of your duchy.
Sit in judgment over issues brought to you by your vassals.
Spend at least six months out of the year actively ruling.
Train soldiers and deliver them to the monarch when ordered.
Benefits
Estates and properties generate 200 gp per month. Among the other suggested perks of this title are the following:
Apart from the followers appropriate to your rank, you gain the services of a squad of three knights, two wizards, a cleric, and a rogue. Each NPC has a CR equal to your PB. You can send the squad on personal quests, and after serving you for one month, the squad returns to their normal home of operations. You must wait two months before summoning them again.
Once per month, you can borrow a magic item with a rarity of up to very rare from the royal treasury. You must return the item within a month unless you choose to borrow the same item again. If the item is lost, destroyed, or has less than its full complement of charges, you are expected to reimburse the treasury.
Once per month, you can request spellcasting services for up to 6th-level spells (though you are expected to pay for expensive components).
