Steer & Beer

The Steer & Beer is a drive-in on the near east side, owned by Jimmy . Like most restaurants of its type, it serves classic regional fare: oversized pork tenderloin sandwiches large enough to serve as a rain hat, burgers, and the Hoosier classic sugar cream pie.   The Steer & Beer keeps a wall for drawings made by children waiting for their meals.

History

Opened in 1960 and has passed through several sets of owners before Jimmy acquired it about 8 years ago.
Be sure to try:
  • the homemade root beer
  • the breaded pork tenderloin (they're different in Indiana)
  • a Black Cow (like a root beer float, but with Coca-Cola)
  • sugar cream pie (a Hoosier specialty, less known elsewhere, and just as decadent as it sounds)

Fun fact: This fictional restaurant is based on a real 1960 drive-in (a regional term for a particular type of restaurant which does not, in fact, welcome cars), today known as the Historic Steer-In.   I (the author) was familiar with the genre of drive-in restaurants, but I didn't have a chance to visit this particular icon before the story's first publication. I went to celebrate and was delighted and a bit terrified to discover that the restaurant actually had a wall dedicated to children's drawings!
