Phereclessos

Phereclessos is a small town in the province of Kathilla in the Shardscape realm of Orochtha. It is the closest settlement to the Eregnos Monument, and thus has seen considerable growth since the Orochthan Wealth Wars due to families and individuals moving to the town in order to be closer to the memorial for their deceased loved ones.   Although a mostly peaceful pastoral town nowadays, Phereclessos has had a colorful history. As a frontier settlement during the time of the Wealth Wars, it has experienced considerable hardships over the years and has had to be rebuilt a handful of times since.

History

Little more than a pastoral village in the countryside of the Kathilla province, early Phereclessos had very little to remark upon, besides perhaps lush grazing for the village's sizable herds. Even during the gold rush in the years leading up to the Wealth Wars, Phereclessos was often passed over for other villages with better amenities and infrastructure.   The troubles for Phereclessos began as tensions with the miners from the Rowoon Kingdom rose. As the Rowoon Kingdom had elected not to establish a settlement for their miners, and conditions at the work site were some of the worst at the time, the miners relied on the kindness of the nearby villages. When Kiepheloi hives began to die off, however, and as the villagers increasingly felt put-upon by the miners, places that might have once accommodated the men started to turn them away.   Having been passed over for much of this time, Phereclessos soon became the sole village that still tolerated the rowdy miners, but even the villagers of humble Phereclessos had limits. Upon being turned away by the wife of a farmer, a disgruntled worker became belligerent, and in the ensuing scuffle, a fire began. Attempts to corrall the blaze were stymied by the worker and his contingent getting into a fist-fight with the first responders, and consequently, a sizable portion of the village burned down.   Following the incident, a group of miners volunteered during their time off to aid in the rebuilding efforts, earning themselves a degree of latitude from the villagers. Unfortunately, showing hospitality to this small group of miners directly led to the next disaster for Phereclessos. Radical elements who had had enough of the outsiders' blatant disregard for the agreements they'd struck with Orochthans escalated the tensions in a sporadic outbreak of attacks aimed at sending a message. One such attack transpired in Phereclessos, which again led to a massive fire.   The village was rebuilt but became subject to destruction yet again not long after at the outbreak of hostilities. As the village lay well within the borders of the Rowoon Kingdom's claim, soldiers marched on the village to force the residents out of their homes. Most buildings were torched in the process, and remained so until a brief lull in the war, during which time, some villagers returned. They fled again, and the rebuilt structures fell into disrepair at the resumption of violence, and collapsed in the upheaval of the earth elementals' counterattack. It wasn't until the onset of construction for the Eregnos Monument that the original inhabitants returned, and they were aided in their rebuilding by the teams tasked with working on the monument.
