    The Shattering
    Disaster / Destruction

The Great Shattering of the ancient continent of Astagan resulted in the loss of more than 50% of the total landmass in the world. The remaining land fractured into even smaller pieces as the continental crust disintegrated and fault lines gave way to violent rivers.   Rapid glacial loss worldwide drove a rise in sea level that decimated coastlines and flooded former river valleys. Notably, ancient trade routes that were formerly the Myca, Fjoria, Strudd, Drudon, and Morstett rivers are now the great seas of Rivania.   The Shattering left Astagan with three sub-continents: Astagan (present-day Astagan and Aleppi), Sendua, and Khol (present-day Kroshone). Each of the three sub-continents would face further destruction as the new world takes shape.

Elven Council Summit & Global Response
    Gathering / Conference

The Elven Council sees the breakdown of the Astagan continent as a critical time during which populations are on the brink of either allyship or war. Further, the Elven Council knows that instability on this scale is likely to lead to a power grab worldwide. To mitigate this possibility, the Council established the Kingdom of Rivania, and sent representatives to each of the two main sub-continents (Sendua and Kohl) in order to try to exact peace and maintain unity.   The inhabitants of the region known today as Sendua sought refuge under the leadership of the elves, as the Shattering brought with it the division of the Dwarven population - the productive half of the population was believed to be lost in the Shattering. (Rather, they were isolated on present-day Asta Isle.)   The inhabitants of the region known today as Kroshone were a mixture of Orc and Tiefling races. The arrival of the Council was welcomed by Tieflings, whose villages were largely in the Verderian Forest on the sub-continent of Astagan. However, the Orcs did not welcome the intervention of the Elves - instead, the Orcs saw the Shattering as a great opportunity to reclaim land they believe to be their native birthright.   These differences between the Orc and Tiefling populations generated conflict that brewed for the next two decades.   The Elven Council promised to connect the newly-separated landmasses with magic portals. They also committed to locating any lost lands and creatures in the immediate future.

Orc Revolution & The Fall of the Tieflings
    Military action

In one swift year, the orc population on the sub-continent of Khol killed every tiefling remaining in the region in the name of a revolution. For the orcs, this was a time of retribution for past grievances against their people whose ancient lands were lost to tiefling colonization. For the tieflings, this remains as an unforgivable act against their people.   The Orc Council named the sub-continent Kroshone, and changed all mentions of Khol (a tiefling name) to orc names instead. This resulted in the Kroshone mountains, Kroshone pass, and the Frule hills (formerly known as Khol hills).

Elven Council Summit Post- Orc Revolution
    Gathering / Conference

The Elven Council arrived to assess the situation on the newly-named Kroshone sub-continent. Their survey revealed the mass loss of tiefling life at the hands of the orcs. Knowing the delicate nature of the political situation, and not wishing to exact war in the region or elsewhere, the Elven Council (with representation from each other global race) agreed to relinquish control and oversight of Kroshone. This decision was to the agreement of the dwarves and humans, the excitement of the orcs, and the deep frustration of the tieflings. Yet the agreement did result in an immediate stabilization of the orc population, and a general move toward reconstruction of global partnerships.

    Tiefling Disappearance
    Population Migration / Travel

The tiefling population, feeling betrayed by all of their global allies save for the gnomes, retreated into the Verderian Forest. After the loss of roughly 10% of their population in the so-called Orc Revolution, and the decision of the Elven Council to allow the Orcs to get away with their crimes, the tieflings decided to pull back from society altogether. Although some younger tieflings decided, out of loyalty to the elves, to move past the horrid events of the year 24, a large majority of the population went into hiding. Gnomes remained secretive of the whereabouts of tieflings, and it is widely accepted that the gnome and tiefling population were of the strongest allies in the world.

    The Forgotten Plague II
    Plague / Epidemic

The second occurrence of the Forgotten Plague was largely denied by the global population until the mass die-off of the gnome population. It is estimated that this occurrence of the plague is responsible for approximately 30% of the global population, which happened over the course of two years.

    Asta Eruption
    Disaster / Destruction

The violent eruption of Asta Peak brought with it both widespread destruction of the landscape and an immediate loss of life to dwarves who inhabited the island. Although some were able to evacuate in time, others perished in the tragic event.

Return of the Dwarves to Asta Isle
    Population Migration / Travel

After reassessing the island, the dwarves that evacuated Asta Isle returned to their homelands. A small percentage of dwarves who had made a home on the Astagan mainland decided to stay in southern Astagan while others moved back to the Forge. Although this decision was mutually accepted by all involved parties, this historical moment underlies some creature interactions today.

    The Fall of Kroshone
    Disaster / Destruction

Tectonic activity in the Kroshone Mountains resulted in the loss of a significant landmass now known as Frule Isle. This geological event severed a majority of the orc population from the greater Kroshone sub-continent. The remaining orc population moved southward and settled just west of the Tree of Renewal.   Over the next decade, other sizeable portions of land would break off into the Drudon Sea - some of which remain uninhabited today.

    The Great Divide
    Disaster / Destruction

A century of unpredictable flooding patterns in central Astagan left inhabitants on edge. The Aleppi Fjords, divided the northeastern and southwestern Aleppi Mountains where the Myca River drained into the Morstett Sea. In the warm season of 4711, the floodwaters rose drastically, eroding the fragile banks and cutting off the Myca Lighthouse from the mainland.   When the colder months arrived, inhabitants were hopeful that the drop in temperature would bring with it a reprieve. Many believed the widening Fjords would solidify as waters froze into solid ice - however, that future never arrived. Instead, the colder months brought incessant blizzards that wreaked havoc on the newly-formed coastlines.   The south-central portion of Astagan sunk under the weight of the floodwaters, leaving behind two distinct sub-continents: Astagan to the North and South Astagan (present-day Aleppi).
