Divine Magic

The magic of faith is very different from arcane magic. It’s more like getting an ear for music so that when hearing a snippet of song the artist can hum the next notes. Certain mortals have predispositions to hear the melodies of certain gods and it is the responsibility of many organized churches to seek out powerful vessels of their gods’ will on the mortal plane, without which the designs of their patron deity would go unfulfilled. It maybe helpful to think of mortal souls and divine beings as possessing a kind of resonance, that when well matched allow the two to interface more or less closely.   There are four tiers of divine magic, which is the only way deities are allowed to directly affect the material world. The first category is the orison, a simple prayer or mantra that when spoken with enough faith and belief can let the tiniest whisper of a divine being’s power alter the course of mortal events at the direction of mortal will. The next tier covers spells of 1st to 3rd level. These are powered directly by the faith of the practitioner and their belief that what they are doing is what their god would want. From 4th to 6th level miracles are granted by intermediaries between the deity and its mortal followers. These beings are usually some form of outsider or other primordial creature aligned with the god in question that can modulate the divine being’s immense power so that the mortal vessel can withstand its potency. Finally from 7th to 9th are the true miracles, capable of being performed only by the mightiest of the faithful in perfect communion with their god. These spells are essentially cast in tandem with a deity, the mortal vessel becoming a pure embodiment of divine will.
