Personal history

Heir to a minor noble title, Kathleen “Kay” Mcdonnel didn't live the pampered life that most nobles get to live. While Kay held a title that had been passed down for generations it was a hollow title these days. One not worth keeping. But once… The House Mcdonnell was once one of the key houses of the Barovian valley. It’s family held in good graces by the common folk thanks to their ability to defend the lands from all manners of threats that existed in the wilds and beyond. They would most frequently hunt Wargs, Rogue Spirits, and the occasional werewolf who couldn't control themselves. But that changed when the barovian war came to a climax and their houses liege strahd gained immortality. His decisions became seemingly rash and violent overnight. The once respected lord now made thralls out of the top echelons of the McDonnell house, turning Kay’s own aging and elderly grandfather into a thrall who then made lesser vampires out of the houses. When the curse was passed on to Kay it was so diluted from the source that she could only be qualified as a lesser thrall of vampire. Her family encouraged her to embrace her new position in the hierarchy by sending her to feed on the occasional upstart human who would do harm to the “new town”. Kay was still of the mind that humanity meant something and always would, so she would disobey her orders whenever given the chance often allowing the quarry to escape so that they could better learn how to avoid her. Often tracking down the humans only to let them escape again and again. Part of it was that she didn't want to end a life, part of it was that it was just more fun to hunt something down multiple times than just once. Her skills as a ranger became solidified after her youth in Barovia.   One day on her hunt against an odd stranger who had wandered into the now separated Demiplane of Barovia. She found that they possessed a way to leave the plane An amulet of Planar Travel! Without any hesitation, she dove forward into the stranger tackling them to the ground and wrestling away the amulet that he held in his hands. However, when she tried to activate it, the amulet didn't seem to function. The stranger informed her that the amulet was attuned to him and that the only way of escape was to follow him and willingly come with him as he explored for a plane where his race had managed to win the “Greatest War” as he called it. She quickly became friends with the individual who turned out to be an incredibly dangerous but soft mind flayer.   It wasn't very long in her explorations before some force that simply called itself the warden came to find her and Monty. His machines waited out her mist form, hunted her down, and managed to get an anti-magic collar on her all before the stranger could even realize what had happened. Monty himself was grabbed simply overwhelmed and beaten to near death. She wound up in the prison where she and Monty became even better friends due to the other inmates fear and rejection of the two.

Mental Trauma

Her extended time locked in her coffin as a vampire spawn did her no good. Her Father was verbally abusive to all of his children, though Kay managed to escape the worst of it.

Has no wider loyalties to people other than herself and her friends. She is finding her place in a world that is utterly foreign to her with a new concept of friendship and relationships under a completely different environment than she is accustomed to. This has led to a major shift in her outlook on a life that is still changing.
