Galifio

Though they may not be the bravest of folk, the chicken-like galifio are devoted to their communities and find great meaning in the simple pleasures of life: a meal shared with friends, a hard day's work, a good night's rest, and sitting down with a good book.

Feathered Friends

Superficially similar to Kenku or Otus in build, the galifio are often a little stockier in build. They tend to have stouter limbs, more barrel-chested bodies, and larger heads. Galifio, like kenku, lost the ability to fly some point in the distant past. They still can use their feathered wing-arms to leap much higher than most species can, however. Adult male galifio grow especially large combs, or head crests, compared to the smaller ones females grow, and men typically develop a wattle later in life that mimics the look of a beard on their fuzzier neighbors.   Galifio feathers come in an astonishing array of colors and patterns: anything from bright red or white, to deep blacks or slate greys. Likewise, the arrangement of feathers on any given galifio is just as varied, and tends to relate to where their family's ancestry is from.

A Little on Edge

Galifio often seem anxious or hyped up to other species. They tend to have sudden, jerky movements, twitch their eyes from side-to-side, and speak in truncated bursts. These behaviors are ancient remnants of when the ancestors of the galifio were prey to nearly every kind of predator. The need to be aware of their surroundings at all times kept their minds in a state of hyper-focus. First light each day was greeted with a call-and-response, making sure every member of the tribe survived the night. Perhaps no one species had their fate changed as much by the Law of Speech as the poor galifio.   Unfortunately, unlike the Timus or Lagombi, the evolution into modern galifio didn't free them of these instincts. Modern galifio do their best to find ways to keep their minds and bodies busy so they don't go stir crazy.

Homemakers

Galifio are viewed by many other species as the ideal neighbors: amicable and courteous, willing to share, help others, and always happy to share a pot of tea. Community, and the wellbeing of it, play a central role in galifio culture. An individual is only as strong and healthy as all of those around them, so the wisdom goes. To ensure the best for everyone, you help those in need as much as you're able, share any excess, watch after children and elders, and be sure to let everyone else know if you spot any trouble. It's seen as more than selfish to put yourself above others - it's downright stupid.   Table intro

Fortune Tellers

Of all schools of magic, galifio seem to have the most affinity for divination and abjuration. Whether this is due to a long-lasting tradition of the practices or a natural talent for the magic required is difficult to determine. Oral histories of the pre-Moot centuries speak of Galifio soothsayers who could predict where a flock should trek on a given day to best avoid danger. Tribal mages cast wards of protection and lay traps for hungry predators. To this day, many galifio households hang magical ingredients or enchanted totems above the front entry to use as wards of household protection.
