A List of Beasts & Other Creatures

Listed below are examples of creatures, both beastly and magical, that adventurers may encounter on their journeys:
 
    • Aboleth: Gigantic sea monsters said to lurk in in the darkest depths of the Silent Sea, aboleths can enslave the minds of those who get too close.
    • Animated Objects: Inanimate objects given life through magic, they follow simple commands and can act independently when needed.
    • Ankheg: Large insect-like creatures that tunnel under the ground. They burst from the soil to catch prey before diving back into their hives.
    • Auroch: Massive bovine that are herded by some species. If encountered in the wild, beware their massive horns.
    • Basilisk: Large reptilian beasts that are reputed to turn their victims to stone before consuming them.
    • Behir: Long and slinking scaly creatures that consume smaller prey whole and can breathe lightning.
    • Blight: Animated plants that walk and assume the shape of intelligent folk, but contain dark magic and ill intent.
    • Bodak: Soulless husks that only superficially resemble what they once were, bodaks wander looking for their next meal, or are controlled by some dark magic.
    • Bulette: A fast and deadly predator that senses vibrations on the surface above its tunnels. They range over huge territories and will gladly eat intelligent creatures.
    • Carrion Crawler: Insect-like beasts that feed on the dead and can paralyze intruders in their territory.
    • Catoblepas: Swamp beasts that look like a hodge-podge of other creatures, catoblepas reek like death. They wade through murky waters looking for prey and plants.
    • Cave Fisher: Large underground crustaceans, cave fishers hunt by shooting a sticky filament from their extended proboscis.
    • Chimera: Magical fusions of two or more beasts, chimeras can have parts from a vast array of creatures. They're completely unpredictable and violent in nature.
    • Chuul: Crustaceans that see by sensing the magic in other creatures, they wander the seas and are only rarely seen near land.
    • Cloaker: A magical creature that resembles a flying stingray. They swoop down to attack prey and envelop victims to feed.
    • Cockatrice: Hideous little beasts that resemble birds, bats, and lizards all at once, their bite can turn a creature to stone.
    • Couatl: Flying serpentine creatures that are rumored to possess great intellect. Few have ever been spotted in the wild.
    • Darkmantle: A squid-like creature that clings to the ceilings of caverns, and drops to land on unwary victims.
    • Dinosaur: Ancient beasts from the earliest days of the World, dinosaurs come in a variety of shapes and sizes. They live in the most remote of places.
    • Dire Beast: An animal, sapient or beastly, that has been afflicted with Direism, turning it into a savage and fearsome foe.
    • Dragon: Rare, powerful, and hungry creatures that can soar the skies and often use their breath as a weapon. They've been known to nest in caves or on peaks.
    • Dragon Turtle: Massive turtle-like creatures that live in the deepest parts of the sea. They've been known to attack ships in search of meals.
    • Elementals: Pure magic given form, elementals often represent an aspect of nature; like air, earth, fire, or water.
    • Ettercap: Bipedal spiders, ettercaps can shoot webs from their thorax to ensnare and strangle prey.
    • Flail Snail: These large slugs are no joke. Their huge antenna have spiky balls on the end that they'll swing wildly at anyone trying to stop them from consuming a farm or the side of a building.
    • Flumph: Floating jellyfish-like magical creatures, flumphs drift through the air using jets in their bodies. It's said they can touch the minds of intelligent folk.
    • Froghemoth: Enormous carnivorous amphibians that live in the murkiest of swamps. Contrary to popular belief, they aren't actually massive bullywugs.
    • Fungi: Any variety of fungi that can attack, poison, move, or otherwise harm living things. Ordinary mushrooms aren't much trouble.
    • Galeb Duhr: What appears to be a mound of earth prone to walking, Galeb Duhr are given life by magicite crystals embedded in their bodies.
    • Giant Crab: Huge crustaceans with sharp legs and pinching claws that outsize most folk. Their chitinous bodies provide great protection from weapons.
    • Giant Insect: Any manner of giant insect. Some fly, some burrow, some live in hives, some skitter, and others crawl. All of them disgusting.
    • Giant Lizard: Unintelligent reptilian animals of a variety of shapes, all commonly called "lizard". They're often predatory and their thick skin is tough to harm.
    • Giant Octopus: Tentacled beasts from the sea, octopuses are smarter than the average beast, and can use their arms to grab, smack, and wield impromptu weapons. They have a sharp beak and a tendency to spray ink to confuse their prey.
    • Giant Scorpion: These massive beasts are commonly found in the dry parts of the world. Watch for the stinger, as the venom of a giant scorpion can kill even a loxodon.
    • Giant Shark: More than twice the size of a regular shark, giant sharks are capable of swallowing many sapient species whole. Their bite will leave serious wounds if it doesn't kill outright.
    • Giant Spider: Enormous creepy crawlies that can ensnare prey in their webs, giant spiders can also be venomous. Their webs are strong enough to be used as rope.
    • Girallon: Violent and easily angered apes with four powerful arms. They savagely beat their prey and rip it to pieces.
    • Ghost: The soul of a once-living creature, bound to haunt a location, object, or person that held significance in its life. Helping them move on is the surest way to get rid of a ghost.
    • Gibbering Mouther: Magic gone horribly wrong, gibbering mouthers appear as mounds of flesh covered in mouths and eyes. The horror upon seeing one is indescribable.
    • Golem: Magical guardians created to follow orders and protect, they're most commonly made of clay, stone, or iron.
    • Grick: Wormlike creatures with four large tentacles to draw food into its beak. They hide among rocks or burrows and pop out to attack unwary prey.
    • Griffon: The front of an eagle and the rear of a lion, these flying predators swoop from the sky to steal livestock.
    • Hippogriff: The front of an eagle and the rear of a horse, these territorial animals mate for life and consume a wide variety of food sources.
    • Homunculus: A diminutive magical creation that acts as an extension of its creator. The most skilled mages can link the homunculus's mind to theirs.
    • Hook Horror: Predators that lurk in caverns, these creatures have chitinous bodies and sharp beaks. Sharper still are their massive forelimb claws.
    • Hunter Shark: Predatory fish the size of many sapient species, sharks can sense the magical energies of creatures up to half a mile away.
    • Hydra: Massive beasts with many heads that grow back if severed, they're rumored to live in deep bodies of water.
    • Killer Whale: Large predatory sea-mammals, these whales are smaller than their docile cousins, but their fearsomeness more than makes up for it.
    • Kraken: Legendary monsters that are said to be the bane of sailors and seaside towns alike, the kraken is rumored to cause powerful thunderstorms.
    • Kua-Toa: Odd fish creatures that can occasionally walk on their hind fins and leave the water. No-one is sure if they're sapient or not.
    • Leucrotta: Ambush predators with a cunning and dangerous ability to mimic the sounds of other creatures, including speech.
    • Lich: Great and powerful mages who have embraced undeath as a means of eternal life. Their souls are held externally in magical traps.
    • Magmin: What appears to be lava held into bipedal form by magic, magmin are mischievous creatures that tend to set the area around them on fire.
    • Manticore: Manticores have the head and body of a feline, the wings of a bat, and a tail like a scorpion. These violent predators are large and deadly enough to hunt almost anything they come across.
    • Meenlock: Insect-like beings that can use the magic in their bodies to induce terror in those who get too close. They stalk their prey for days, weakening their minds with nightmares and paranoia.
    • Mimic: Shapeshifting magical predators that take the appearance of common objects, they surprise creatures that come near them with rows of sharp teeth.
    • Myconids: Walking fungi that can release spores that induce hallucination, sleep, or paralysis. They don't seem to mean any harm.
    • Oozes: Large gelatinous masses that fully absorb their prey before slowly dissolving it.
    • Otyugh: Large stout creatures with three legs, a huge toothy mouth, and eyes on one of its three tentacles, they're truly grotesque.
    • Owlbear: Huge creatures with the face of an owl on the body of a bear. They're extremely territorial and will attack almost any foe.
    • Peryton: A beast that looks like a vulture with a stag's head, perytons prefer to pin their prey down and rip their hearts out.
    • Phase Spider: These nasty arachnids have magical energy that allows them to move unseen and untouched.
    • Piercer: These wormlike creatures are the larval stage of a roper. They hang from ceilings, pretending to be stalactites, before dropping to impale prey.
    • Purple Worm: A mythological beast said to have dug the tunnels that crisscross Oroi, the purple worm has never been seen or found.
    • Quaggoth: Creatures that live in dark place and resemble deformed lycans or leonin. When cornered, they lash out in a ferocious bloodlust.
    • Quipper: Little predatory fish with seemingly endless hunger. When they smell blood in the water they go into a frenzy.
    • Remorhaz: Huge insects that live in cold climates, they wait for vibrations on ice or packed snow to tell where prey is moving above.
    • Roc: Massive birds that live on the highest peaks of the World, they build their nests from whole trees, boats, or caravans.
    • Roper: The mature form of a piercer, these creatures look like stalagmites from a distance. When prey gets close, they lash out with sticky tentacles.
    • Rust Monster: These insects have acidic fluid in their shells, causing metallic objects that strike them to rust and wear.
    • Saber-Tooth: Large felines with powerful paws, tough hides, and two massive saber teeth, these ambush predators have been known to feed on unfortunate minotaurs and loxodon.
    • Salamander: Magical snakes that can breathe fire, they hatch by burning their way through their eggs. They roast their prey before eating.
    • Scarecrow: If too much magic or a dark spirit infests a farm, a scarecrow may come to life and attack. Beating the hay out of them is the best method for disposing of a wandering scarecrow.
    • Shadow: Moving shadows of sapient creatures that attempt to strangle and consume the living. It's said that if you're killed by a shadow, your own shadow will join it.
    • Shambling Mound: A mass of plant life tangled together and moved by overabundant magic, shambling mounds consume material they come across, growing ever larger.
    • Skeleton: Raised from their graves by magical means, skeletons can be found in the physique of all sapient folk. Without direction, they'll pantomime actions from their lives.
    • Specter: If a ghost remains unable to pass for too long, it forgets who it was and what has bound it, becoming a specter. They have nothing left but rage, hatred, and sorrow.
    • Sphinx: Said to live in hidden lairs in remote places, tall-tales say that a sphinx asks riddles or tests your mettle before giving you a reward.
    • Stirge: These small flying beasts look like oversized, fuzzy mosquitos. While one is an annoyance, a pack can be a real threat.
    • Swarm: Any mass of small creatures, like snakes, rats, insects, fish, or bats.
    • Thri-Keen: Bipedal grasshoppers that wander savannahs and deserts in packs. They tend to flee from groups, but will attack and eat individuals with no qualms.
    • Trapper: Large flat creatures that can change the outward appearance of their skin. They often pretend to be floors or walls, popping out and wrapping themselves around a victim when they get close enough.
    • Umber Hulk: Large insects that burrow underground using their powerful arms and incredibly tough chitin. Their gaze is said to numb the minds of victims.
    • Water Weird: A magically animated pool of water that looks mundane from a distance. When it awakens it has a serpentine appearance.
    • Will-o'-Wisp: Floating balls of light that look like lanterns from a distance. Don't follow one, or it will lead you to your death.
    • Worg: Large predators that look a bit like canines, felines, or bears, worgs run across the wilderness in packs, hunting creatures weaker than themselves.
    • Wyvern: A category of creatures related to dragons, wyverns are far more common and come in a variety of forms. Typically, they have two winged arms and two legs, but the rest can change vastly between species.
    • Yeti: Huge apelike creatures that live on the coldest mountains. They howl when hunting, and the sound carries across remote peaks.
    • Zombie: Reanimated flesh that wanders aimlessly in search of living things to eat. Their minds are devoid of any though or emotion.
