Farsights
The cloaked knight fled from the palace, black fabric billowing behind him as he spurred his enchanted mount forward. It effortlessly carried him away from the Castle, out of the city, and crossing the horizon in a handful of moments.
Ser Wrecke simply watched.
"Well?" The King questioned. "Are you going to do anything? Shoot him, perhaps?"
"I will, my lord, I promise."
Another moment passed.
"I think he may be getting away, Ser Wrecke."
"If you think so, sire."
Slowly, deliberately, Wrecke unslung his rifle from his shoulder and leveled it at the horizon. The cloaked knight hadn't been visible to the kings eyes for some time, but the minute movement of the rifles barrel belied Wrecke tracking something.
The tension was broken with the crack of the rifle as Wrecke pulled the trigger. The king let out a breath held too long.
"There, sire. Send out a rider and you'll find his brains covering an..." He looked down his scope again. "-Oak tree near the river."
Sharpshooters have long since played an important role on the battlefield, both in reconnaissance and disruption of enemy forces. Nations across the globe have a rich tradition of skill in the ranged arts, that has often traveled from the bow to the rifle.
The human eye, however, can only see so far unassisted by science or magic and as with all things the race to augment the mortal form in some way has improved upon the concept. From scopes, to magical links to a weapon, and all the way to the farsight.
An innovation only recently made available to the general populace, a farsight was something created by Ser Wrecke the Sharpshooter, during the time of King Gowyr. It was an invention by his own hand, and something that he jealously guarded even past his death, making sure that none understood it by the time of his passing. Lost since the fall, it took academics some time to find a working example, and much longer to carefully dismantle the tool without damaging it so they could figure out how it function.
Now, through careful application of precision lenses and magical implantation, the ability to see as far as Ser Wrecke can be bought for an exorbitant sum. His ability to shoot at such distances, however, likely can't be found on a shelf.
