Mental characteristics

Personal history

Miles was born in Massachusetts to Scottish-American parents. His family operated a fishing business for much of his life, but during the French and Indian War, Miles's father took up privateering. A teenager at the time, Miles joined him and learned a great deal from the experience. Afterward, he left the fishing business to join a whaling vessel. He was later made a mate after an accident killed most of the crew and nearly destroyed the ship. With a very small crew they took the battered ship to safe port, earning Miles respect from the captain and his mateship. Eventually, he was made captain himself, on the ship The Abigail Cobb. When his father died, Miles inherited all his journals, and those of his grandfather, as well as land and money he had been unaware were in the family at all. These journals helped shape the way he ran his ships and the land he expanded with his inherited money, turning it into Dunnstown, home to many of his crew members and their families.

Accomplishments & Achievements

Miles considers his greatest achievement to be becoming a captain of his own vessel.

Failures & Embarrassments

There have been some interactions with members of his crew over the years that he has dwelled on for long periods of time, wondering if he made the right decision. He never allows such things to stop him from doing anything that needs to be done, however.

Morality & Philosophy

Miles has made it a point to consistently respect and support all those who respect him. He tries to be good to everyone, until someone treats him in a way he doesn't appreciate. In that instance, he's not afraid to retaliate in whatever way he can without endangering others. As a captain, he ensures everyone on his crew can work together without issue. When there is an issue, he deals with it as fairly as he can. He also treats every member of his crew the same way, regardless of their position on the crew. While expectations vary by duty, and he interacts more with certain members of the crew than others by necessity, he still takes the time to get to know all his crew members and what their needs are. He builds his crews on mutual respect and genuinely takes the time to care about his people. He even allows his crew members to purchase parcels of land from him, in what is referred to as Dunnstown, so they may live away from the cities and towns where life may be difficult for various reasons. He never allows a member of his crew to suffer needlessly.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

Miles always does what is in the best interest of his crew. He wants them all to have a comfortable, content life. If his crew had not wanted to pursue privateering, he would not have chosen to provide for them. Because they all shared a loyalty to the American side of the conflict for various reasons, and not wanting to become a British whaleman, the privateer commission was the best choice for them. His choice of ship also reflects his desire to protect and care for his crew above all else.

Hygiene

Miles encourages the best possible personal hygiene for himself and his crew given the close conditions on board.

Social

Contacts & Relations

Miles has ties with many international smugglers and merchants through Levi Finley, who backs his privateer, The Scot.

Family Ties

Parents: Andrew and Elizabeth Dunn   Grandfather: Captain Gawen Dunn, "The Scot"

Religious Views

"God is the sea."

Wealth & Financial state

Miles owns a large chunk of land he partially inherited and partially purchased. Part of the land has been sold off, at a discount, to current and former crew members who don't wish to live in nearby towns or cities. Because he has no family of his own, he is able to set aside earnings for the care of his ship and crew without worrying too much about finances. He keeps meticulous books of accounts to ensure he has no unexpected expenses.
