Tin
Tin is a metal that is of significant importance to the economies of Tuono's Corpse due to its great usefulness, often in the form of varying alloys to produce everyday utensils and vessels. Tin is mined using either open-pit or shaft mines depending on the source and is primarily found in primarily the lower mountainous regions such as that of Balomir, the base of the Cayan Ridge and the eastern extents of the Redcrest Mountains in Torania.
To a lesser extent, minor Tin deposits can also be found within ancient river beds. Areas such as the delta of the Bryn within Sarbrynia or the Torpi Marshes at the convergence of the Yarrow and Bryn rivers are rife with such deposits. While technically simpler to extract than such material found within mines, these deposits are far less lucrative.
Tin forms some of the most important alloys used within society, alloyed with copper it produces bronze which is among the few readily available metals of sufficient corrosion resistance and strength/durability. Alloyed with a small amount of lead or copper (or both) and it provides Pewter, a hugely popular material from which to make utensils and vessels. With a base of lead, it may also be used to form solder.
History & Usage
History
While Tin is now relatively abundant and cheap, it is thought to have once been considered a precious metal due to the relative ease with which it can be formed into a shiny, reflective material. Its extraction from riverbed formations is thought to have begun in ancient times, this is due to the rather distinct black/dark purple colour it retains in this form. Subsequently, Tin found within riverbeds is more easily smelted into purer forms.
The areas of Volnia and the easter coast of the Runic Empire were abundant with this particular Tin, leading to extensive trading route into the grasslands and further west. Over time, those relying on this trade of Tin, particularly those within the central grasslands, began to experiment with mining for local sources.
While local mining for Tin did reduce the need for the established trade routes from the south and east, these sources continued to be valuable to those in the grasslands due to the high cost of extracting Tin from ores found within shaft mines and the like.
