Wights

greater undead

Wights are hateful, intelligent undead that resemble armed and armored corpses, driven by a burning hatred of the living and a desire to snuff out all life they encounter. Unlike mindless zombies, they are cunning hunters and commanders who can plan ambushes, direct minions, and nurse grudges over long stretches of unlife.

Origin and nature
Many wights are formed from the souls of cruel or ambitious mortals whose hatred or dark pacts drag them back from death, sometimes empowered by curses, evil deities, or potent necromancy. They exist half in the mortal world and half in the realm of death, animated by negative energy that sustains their unliving bodies and fuels their predatory hunger for life.

Basic Information

Anatomy

A wight looks like a twisted echo of the humanoid it once was: gaunt, desiccated flesh stretched over a withered frame, with eyes that burn like cold embers in a corpse-pale face. It often wears rusted armor, grave-stained clothes, or relics of its former station, giving the impression of a fallen champion or lord who refused to lie quietly in the grave.

Behaviour

Wights stalk barrows, battlefields, and haunted ruins, lurking where death is thickest and patiently waiting for living prey to draw near. Their touch or weapons can drain a victim’s life force, and those they slay may rise again as undead servants under the wight’s control, swelling its ranks with unwilling followers.

On the battlefield, a wight often acts as a commander for packs of zombies, skeletons, or other lesser undead, using them as shields and tools while it targets the most vulnerable or powerful foes. Its relentless nature and ability to raise new undead make it a growing threat if left unchecked, turning isolated skirmishes into spreading pockets of undeath across the region.
