Inspiration: Spider crabs go to one spot to molt every season
A race of Spider Crabs from the depths of the ocean, they have established many 'pockets' of safety where they can molt in peace. During molting, not only is it exhausting, the shells need time to harden.
The discarded shells are gathered and processed, not going to waste.
Perhaps these spider crabs are like... spiders
