Inspiration: an 'ooze' from 3.5e Epic Level Handbook
Possibly insects cursed alongside someone else, but they don't serve this person (Imhotep's Curse)
A Ruinous swarm of insects that haunt an abandoned temple and possibly more. They're feared as the swarm has no queen, no obvious weak point, and attacks with such ferocity. Those who attract its ire are shredded to the bone in seconds.
Any of the insects somehow separated from the swarm don't last long, keeping scholars puzzled.
Ruin Insect: One of the thousands of insects that make up a ruin swarm. Each seems capable of restarting the entire swarm, and move in perfect coordination with the other insects.
