Inspiration: Mix of Pompeii and Kitum Cave
A whole forest, no, a town, all buried beneath literal tons of ash and lava. After the lava and ash settled, it turned into a massive cave system, where creatures from all over come to scrape nutritious salt from the walls.
A larger creature with tusks and horns does most of the digging, while the rest of the animals feed on the scraps left behind.
Bats live in the cave, and have become unintentional carriers of plague, both infesting the caverns and wherever they fly during their nightly hunts for food.
