Voidform Nightmare

(click here to return to Character Creation)
Based on the Shapeshifter class from BESM d20. Can only be taken by Vessels or other Void-based beings that have embraced the power and potential of the Void. HP, saves, THAC0, WP, and NWP as Priest. Special abilities as Shapeshifter, with following exceptions:
  • Level 1: Instead of Alternate Form (Cosmetic Changes), gain Void Shade Form. This is treated as an Alternate Form in all respects, with the following qualities:
  • Once per turn, a Voidform Nightmare can instantaneously shift to or from the tentacled, insubstantial form of their Shade. All carried equipment is subsumed and treated as being in internal inventory, while worn equipment is treated as charm-equipped unless the DM says otherwise. In Shade form, a Voidform Nightmare is immaterial, taking half or no damage from most attacks. They can carry and move items with their tendrils, but wielding weapons is very difficult without hands. If their corporeal body is turned to stone or similarly petrified, the Voidform Nightmare automatically turns to Shade form inside the stone husk and can exit freely, taking all equipment with them and leaving only a statue.
  • In Shade form, Voidform Nightmares also gain access to a special Void tendril attack: 2 attacks (which can be multiplied by Haste) that require a targeting check (not an attack roll) to hit, with the opponent having a -2 penalty to their defense. These tendrils only affect targets that have souls. The tendrils deal 4d8 damage and 2 Con drain per hit. They have a range of 30 feet. If the Voidform Nightmare is strong enough to lift the target, they can take a -4 penalty on the targeting check to try to trip or disarm the target instead of dealing damage.

(Starting special attack build: Flurry (1), Flexible, Body Drain, Short Range, Toxic (soul))
  • Level 2: May take Extra Arms +2 instead of Flexibility +1. This second pair of arms is often somewhat smaller than the first pair, with fewer digits, and wields weapons as if the bearer was one size smaller (so for a Medium character, these arms could use weapons sized for a Small character). If they do start small, they may grow to full size as more levels of Voidform Nightmare are taken, or simply as the bearer matures, at the DM’s discretion.
  • Level 3, 6, 12, 19: Ranks of Alternate Form can be applied to Void Shade Form to give it more points to work with, as is normal with Alternate Form. If a rank of Alternate Form (Full-Powered) is instead used to create a new Alternate Form, it should be fitting as a result of Void-mastery and is subject to DM approval.
  • Level 4, 7, 11, 16, 18, and 20: Character points can be used normally, but ability score increases bought with them only apply to Void Shade Form.
  • Level 9 and 15: Instead of Mimic (all) +1, gain Self-Shape +1. This functions similarly to Mimic (all), but where Shapeshifters typically focus on observing and mimicking others, the focus of a Voidform Nightmare is internal mastery. With experience and focus, a Voidform Nightmare can briefly reshape and refine the fluid Void of their form to accomplish specific goals. As an action, a Voidform Nightmare with this ability can roll a Void Shaping check (or an untrained Int or Cha check if they lack Void Shaping) to attempt to grant themself an Attribute or higher Ability Score of their choice. A shaped ability or score lasts for 30 seconds at rank 1 of Self-Shape and this doubles with every additional rank. There is no limit to the number of these effects that can be active at once. Check difficulties and limitations are as follows:
  • Enhance Ability Score: Choose one ability score to enhance, and choose a value for that score up to a maximum of 25. (The chosen value cannot be lower than your natural value for that score.) Roll a Void Shaping (or untrained Int or Cha) check with a bonus equal to ¼ your Voidform Nightmare level. If your margin of success is equal to or greater than the target score value minus 10, the chosen ability score (before magic bonuses) becomes the chosen value until the duration expires.
  • Gain Attribute: Choose an Attribute from the Allowed Attributes list (below) with a rank less than or equal to that of Self-Shape. Roll a Void Shaping (or untrained Int or Cha) check with a bonus equal to ¼ your Voidform Nightmare level. If your margin of success is equal to or greater than 5 plus the rank of the chosen Attribute, you gain that Attribute at the chosen rank until the duration expires.
  • Allowed Attributes (subject to DM approval): Adaptation, Armor, (Attack Combat Mastery?, )Contamination, Damn Healthy!, (Defense Combat Mastery?, )Duplicate, Elasticity, Energy Bonus, (Enhanced [Ability]?, Environmental Control (Darkness or Silence only)?, )Extra Arms, Features (subject to DM approval), Flight (wings), Heightened Awareness, Heightened Senses (subject to DM approval), Insubstantial, Jumping, Natural Weapons, Regeneration (though this will never exceed the regeneration the class already grants, so it’s pointless), Size Change, Special Defense, Special Movement (with strict DM approval), (Superstrength?, ), Swarm, (Tunneling?), Water Speed
