Gruskell the Obsidian (Groos-kell)

King Gruskell of Haskar

An ancient immortal king whose obsessions led his kingdom to great heights and eventual ruin.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

An adult human male made purely of obsidian.

Special abilities

Gruskell has multiple layers of immortality, effectively making him truly immortal. He will regenerate even when reduced to a skeleton.   He basically took cursed solcite, forged it into a body, added some divine immortality buffs, and bonded himself with a sword that won't let him die. He also has multiple souls in there, so it's even harder to harm him in ways that matter. He may have made soul-pudding out of himself somehow, which is great defense but may have strange effects on his mentality. Looking at what he did to himself, Blythe couldn't tell whether he was a horribly unlucky idiot or pure genius.

Specialized Equipment

The skeleton was accompanied by a very concerning sword. A mix of entropic, necromantic, and some other things hitting everything nearby. The sword does detect as evil. Halrath the Wounding Blade.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Gruskell earned the title of "tyrant". Long before the rise of the Renegade Legion, he took power in the kingdom of Haskar. While the details have been lost to history, it is known that he managed to acquire multiple layers of immortality, regardless of moral cost, and used his power and ambition to lead his kingdom to great heights. His obsessions were also his downfall, however: Eventually, his kingdom fell, and he was imprisoned under a mountain in Leithien alongside many other great threats.   He was still imprisoned there when Terana DelGarrod and her adventuring party fell into the dungeon in 24 ARL. The party found his skeleton after he just barely failed to stalemate a giant shaggoth on his own. Even reduced to a skeleton, he was still regenerating. Seeing that he was a very strange being with a very concerning sword and special forms of immortality, the party called Blythe Derguil to consult.   Blythe did some divinations and scanning of her own, then took the tyrant as loot. The party handed him off to her for research, investigation, and containment. Gruskell, once recovered enough to be aware of the situation, responded only with silent resignation; he seemed content enough to simply stare into the horizon, finally free of his mountainous tomb.

Mental Trauma

  • Gruskell was trapped in the lightless caves under a mountain, also inhabited by a menagerie of other continental threats, for a very long time. It is exceedingly unlikely that he came out mentally unscathed.
  • Messing with (and possibly liquifying) his soul in the pursuit of immortality may have had negative effects on his mentality. Sticking several other souls into his body alongside his own likely didn't help.
  • Intellectual Characteristics

The old tyrant is power-hungry, intelligent, and capable of learning. His level of sanity after the age of imprisonment is as of yet unknown.

    Morality & Philosophy

Gruskell does not detect as Evil, though it's unclear whether this is a true reflection of his mentality or a consequence of his physical state. Saveon, the Sword of Evil, had good feelings about him, which is a bad sign for his morality.

    Personality Characteristics

    Motivation

The acquisition of power was and is one of the tyrant's main motivations. How it weighs against his other considerations after his imprisonment is unknown.
