After Dark Matter and an array of other Exotic particles were discovered in the 2030s, the initial steps of research were taken by the EU and later stolen by the US. In the present Era, Portal Technology is still in the very early phase. There are attempts to recreate the Portal gun from the portal but most research and development is centred around a type of Stargate tech. When the Exotic particles were discovered in 2030, there was evidence found of a pocket universe known as Hyperspace.
This Pocket universe could be used to bridge the gap between areas of space. Initial Portals can transit matter across the same room and still nearly blow out a DM Generator. They're still very inefficient and complete power hogs but the science leads inventors to believe that using a micro portal projector or a 'Portal gun' could allow instantaneous transport of matter across rooms or perhaps from a couple of rooms.
The Big Portals are a part of the theorised Hypegate project, where ships are meant to speed up and punch through a portal gate into Hyperspace. Obviously, the creation of these portal gates makes FTL a reality but they could only be maintained by Dark Matter power generators.

Possible Uses
Mass Deployment of Portals could optimize travel in ways never before seen, Megaplexes could have local portals that transport even larger numbers of people across places and significantly boost mobility. It could also make going to a separate country for lunch hand making it in time for dinner an actual possibility. The near instantaneous transport of resources would alleviate giant amounts of pressure on resource transport and relegate trains, and ships to more important resources for long hauls while supplies get quickly transferred within a city. This could also mean that Work commutes could literally cross countries and break down national borders and further optimize human cooperation, providing the current Majority Nationalist Governments of the world either fall or moderate. It may even dramatically speed up communication. ISPs could feed signals through portals and shorten connection distance, rapidly progressing communication technologies and making globalization even faster. With Interstellar Ambitions in mind, Portals could make interplanetary trade even easier with portals b between space stations to speed up sunlight travel and lessen interstellar traffic while also simplifying interplanetary communication lines.The Powers Behind Development
As is to be expected if you read the Article on Dark Matter Energy, South American Treaty Organization and The United States of America are the two big powers behind the development of portals. While the rest of the world tries to play catch up, these two continental rivals are eager to be the ones to invent portal technology first and apply it for military use in order to beat each other on the geopolitical stage. There is a lot of tension with Portal Tech, both Governments have theorised what potential invasions or counter-invasions could look like while using this tech. However Military ambition isn't the only Ambition the two powers have. While the USA dreams of Eternal Global Dominance, SATO dreams of kick-starting Re-globalisation and creating a Globalised world built to last with better Internet, connectivity and of course, Travel options.Potential Risks
As the study goes on, scientists have found evidence of a new type of disaster, affectionately called a Resonance cascade, based on the Half-life version of this event. If a Portal was to be unstable or explode, it's likely to create a mass discharge of energy that could vaporize everything in the vicinity, unleash horrific amounts of gamma radiation and cause cascading daisy chains of explosions. There is also reason to worry that such events may actually spur unknown predators to attack current reality, as such methods of fail safeing the portals are always being looked into. Another Hazard of course is invasions because the gates are doors and if you leave the door open, anyone could just walk in. new Security measures will have to be developed, adding a new layer of concerns for security organizations or the military trying to secure a site.Power Problems
As you may have guessed, this process is extremely power-hungry. Current-day DM Generators tend to blow when even transporting an object into the same room. This is likely due to the flow of power rather than the generation of it. Power use kicks up at the dropping into Hyperspace and then again out of hyperspace. Most known cables tend to catch on fire drying to vent all of that power through and everything ends up overcharged, frying electronics and if a power problem results in an unstable rift, the earlier hazards explained could result. Meaning that in order to make Portals a reality, Earth not only has to make portals work but work out how to stabilise them and how to safely shut them off when a problem arises.
Stargate imagined a world where civilizations could shorten the distance between each other with near mythological portal gates but in Neonpage, Science is unlocking the keys to make these stargates a reality. Much like the Stargate setting, this unlocking of gates could bring in a slew of dangers. Science already pretty much confirmed the existence of multiverses and already created plans for interdimensional invaders.
Hype Gates would operate on a similar method to this, except the ship must be moving in order to avoid splattering the entire crew into swiss cheese once the ship enters into hyperspace and a DM Engine must be on board in order to decelerate properly to avoid splattering the crew upon exit. It is calculated that in order to jump from Earth to Alpha Centauri Prime, it would take 5 hours or more to get there with this FTL method.
This is fast enough that proper Warp Technology (Aka Wormhole Manipulation) won't be necessary until Humanity wishes to reach far-off stars, for instance travelling to the rims of the galaxy or the Galactic Core though it is likely that Full blown Warp technology will be utilised roughly 200 - 300 Years after Hypegates have been implemented and galactic colonization begins.
AI calculate that in order to Drop a fleet out of Hyperspace it'd require first to have a large Hypegate to fit the ships and then AI to coordinate flight paths and account for errors or chaos factors. Given the first two criteria are met, you could probably have fleets up to hundreds of ships warping in at once however the feat would be highly power-hungry and Ai also calculate that at Earth's current rate of progression, such feats should be the only possible by the 2170s in two scenarios if they gain knowledge of Alien FTL tech or make a repeated series of breakthroughs.
In the most realistic estimate, most predict that the late 2290s will likely be when Earth FTL tech develops to the point where it can mass deploy fleets or use large amounts of interstellar trade. However, this rate is seen as not optimal and many efforts are being taken to hasten this process and hopefully have FTL Interstellar capabilities by 2110s in order to colonize near by world and alleviate population issues.
A Resonance Cascade is when an Unstable portal discharges energy, this could cause adjacent portals to also detonate and risk reality destabilising. It also produces a lot of Gamma radiation, polluting and contaminating nearby areas. If a Portal goes off, it's observed that they become what's known as a 'Fissure'. A Fissure is an unstable rift which appears to close either when reality stablises or the fissure simply runs out of energy.
A Fissure though untested and untouched is believed to still be usable and thus the unclosable rift could become a severe vulnerability and allow invaders. A Fissure is also deadly because they'll unleash Temporal Tremours which are further discharges of energy and radiation that'll intoxicate and kill everything around it without gamma protection and if you get too close to the core of the fissure, you're likely to atomize.
