Tumblejack
Contentment is Boring
Wooden footsteps and hollow giggles can be heard terrorizing the homes of a community as distraught citizens attempt to keep a wary eye out for the being that turns simple daily tasks into minefields of luck. The whims of this unknown creature are the difference between having a delicious pie and a burnt pastry or a sunny day with clean laundry and a sudden rainstorm with wet sheets.
Playing almost as if the very concept of boredom is a poison to be dispelled, the Tumblejack is a Wyrdkin that is apt at creating an interesting day for those they come across.
For better or worse.
Basic Information
Anatomy
Exclusively bound to the realm of the inorganic due to their propensity to manifest as toy-like creatures, Tumblejacks are a Wyrdkin that lean towards slender wood-like builds, often appearing almost like puppets without any strings, although other versions have been known to exist, which may look like other types of doll-like toys.
While Tumblejacks are generally on the smaller side, with many rarely reaching higher than a foot, some especially powerful Tumblejacks have been known to take on the slender appearance and size of scarecrow-like figures, with their resulting casting of fortunes and misfortunes being of a similarly larger caliber.
Behaviour
While Tumblejacks are rarely the most complicated of creatures, they have been known to cause great disruption in the communities that they form in, often acrobatically moving from location to location to cause the lives of those they come across to suddenly become filled with good and bad consequences. Able to easily scamper away from those that would seek to capture or kill them, they can often cause a large amount of damage before they are eventually destroyed.
Much like other Wyrdkin, however, the Tumblejack is not without its innate rules. As such, those who are especially keen may come to find that this species of Wyrdkin can be attracted to cultural icons of fortune or misfortune and appear to almost compete with them in a way, if not outright seeking to destroy them. As such, knowledgeable hunters have been known to use simple symbols of luck to trap these disruptive creatures for proper disposal.
Additional Information
Uses, Products & Exploitation
Should a Tumblejack be successfully captured, either through physical force or wits, they can grant their captor the means to bend their or another's luck towards fortune or misfortune for about a day. Once this process has been completed, however, the Tumblejack will revert back into a lifeless pile of toy-like scrap as the forces holding them together run out. Due to the unreliable nature of their manifestation and capture, however, this powerful ability is unlikely to be exploited at will.
Facial characteristics
Notable for their two interchangeable expressions, Tumblejacks can swap between joyful and sad faces with a turn of their head, thus showing whether fortune or misfortune is about to be unleashed upon the world around them. This change in expression is generally also accompanied by a change in the coloration of their clothes, buttons, and other features; their negative expression often possessing darker colors and their positive expression bearing lighter colors.
Average Intelligence
Tumblejacks are driven to find mundane situations where they are able to ply their manipulation of fortunes on others, and as such, while they can cleverly hide and escape pursuit, they are unlikely to be smart enough to construct complex schemes. Instead, they tend to be opportunistic and will stop to manipulate the fortune of any situation that they happen to come across, often to a devastating effect as victims are generally unaware of the creature's presence.
Contentment is Boring... so much truth! And the cause of so much human troubles! Lol
Thanks for the comment! I agree! I thought coming up with a creature that emphasized this would make for an interesting regionless monster. Glad someone agrees!
