The Age of Myth
“Before crowns were forged, before cities rose, there was only wild blood and firelight.”
The Age of Myth marks the oldest known era of Mankind on Acarus—a time that spanned more than twelve thousand years after the first dawn, the moment of mortal awakening. In this primordial age, the races of the world knew nothing of kingdoms, laws, or teknology. Humanity existed as scattered tribes of hunters and gatherers, unaware of the divine spark flickering within them—the same flame of ambition that would one day give rise to empires. The Elves, too, walked Acarus during this time, though they had only recently fled the their ancient homeland, and found themselves stranded in the realm of Man. While more advanced than the native tribes, The Elves had lived for untold lifetimes as naturalist druids—creatures of balance and harmony, not conquest. But something changed. Whether it was the corruption of Man or the nature of Acarus itself, The Elves soon abandoned their old ways. They, too, began to build, to conquer, to reach for greatness at the cost of their roots. Magick became the fulcrum of change—especially for humanity. Human magic, drawn from deep wells of emotion and from the terrifying power of planes-beyond, was more volatile and potent than the fey-crafted spells of The Elves. Though The Elves possessed deeper intellects and longer lives, the raw destructive power of human wyzards could not be matched. This was a world still teeming with monsters. Dragons flew openly beneath the sun. Beasts of myth roamed freely. Their presence was not aberrant but expected. The many-faced creatures of legend lived among mortals, and while the truth has faded, the stories endure. Over time, the races of Acarus fought, traded, and bled for dominance. Through countless wars, colonization, and ever-shifting alliances, the first crude kingdoms of Man, Elf, and Dwarf emerged. Among the most devastating of these early conflicts were the wars between the Wytches and Wyzards of Man and the Fey Elves, seeding the ancient blood feud that endures to this day. The Elves still, in part, sought to preserve balance, but the unchecked hunger of Man was beyond their control. As the centuries ground on, monsters were driven back, borders were drawn, and civilization took root. Empires rose, trade flourished, and the arcane was refined into a craft. Scholars of the time began to speak of a new era—an age of light, progress, and unity. They called it: The Golden Age of Acarus.
