Ship's Biscuit

aka. Hardtack or Emergency Rations

Once an everyday food onboard ships, that filled a sailor's stomach. Nowadays only found in a ship's emergency rations, to give energy when nothing else is left.

Hardtack

Hardtack as it was once known best, where twice backed cookies that didn't deteriorate, or at least very slow, while keeping most of their caloric value. Ship's had them in their provision as there base food. Once food preservation and refrigeration became common goods, hardtack was set aside for more edible and things and fruit & vegetables of course.

Emergency rations

Besides the name, there's not much that resembles the cookies of old. Maybe the sizing. Modern ship's biscuit is a compressed little block full of energy. Designed to keep a sailor alive while they wait to be rescued in their lifeboat or raft. The packaging is very durable, and the product is generally unaffected by heat or cold. As the rations are stored in the boat and raft. Generally they have an expire date five years or more from production.

Sunset Dawn's demise

The Sunset Dawn was gone, the bomb had hit it mid ships. Spiting the hull in two, and setting off the powder magazine. The wreck sunk fast. Almost comically the liferaft popped up automatically when the stern dropped below the survace. A liferaft no-one had ever looked at. The pirates swam out in the bay and started diving down to their old ship, retrieving what they could. Unfortunately the magazine was right next to their provision store, destroying almost everything, and what wasn't destroyed by the explosion, the seawater spoiled.

In addition to the fruits and critters to be found on their hideaway island the fresh water and ship's biscuits in the raft became a vital part of their diet.

Good take on the prompt, I love staying alive! I also kinda like hardtack. Add some cheese and/or seasoning (and maybe some water depending on hardness, and it's a nice snack in my humble opinion!

They don't taste bad either. Not that there's much flavour, but not bad.
