Salt
Smuggling
"Salt? You want us to smuggle salt?" Rose asked surprised. "No, you want you to smuggle. And I only happen to have a cousin who needs to move salt." Armani countered.
The Pirate crew had just sailed the Red Sunrise over, they were still very low on crew, so hunting wasn't a good choice at the moment. But Captain Rose had visited Armani's Warehouse to find a cargo that had to be moved without being seen by the law.
"Salt? Armani want us to smuggle salt?" Michael asked surprised. "No, we want to smuggle. he only has salt." Rose answered, echoing the conversation she had herself with their favourite merchant. "How much salt?" the bosun asked thinking about the practical matters. "Fifteen hundred tonnes. " Michael just blinked at that reply, and then called for Aleksey and discussed how to make sure the fresh cut gun-ports would best be sealed.
The pirates sailed the ship down the coast to the agreed rendevous point. A small bay which was quit scenic, one could keep up the facade of them being a super yacht. And at night a fishing boat came by with it's light doused. To transfer a few bags from their fish hold. Rose wasn't aware how this was all aranged, but their hold was filling up, slowely. After two days Rose decided to move the ship a few miles along the coast, sticking to long in one place didn't feel right.
In the end they had sixty-thousand bags of salt in the hold. The Red Sunrise lay deep in the water, not as deep as Michael had feared, but having the gun-ports propperly sealed wasn't a bad thing. The ship reacted to the weight she carried, there was less heal when the sails where set, and she turned a bit slower. But once she was underway she pushed trough the waves like a snow plow. Gaining a propper speed.
The Red Sunrise crossed the ocean with that cargo, it was one of the most relaxing sails across. The ship sailed like it was bound by railroad tracks, and the weather was favourable all the way. They mored alongside a dock in a small abandonned port, and a dozen guys got to work, and in a day and a night they had emptied the Sunrise, and a small box was passed to Rose. A box full of euro bills.
Salt
Ever since it's discovery salt has been used in cooking to give a meal additional flavouring. But more importantly it was used to perserve food, mostly meat. Salt was found in the ground, and can be mined, but is also extracted from the seas by letting the water evaporate away. This can be done by flooding shallow planes, and let the sun heat the water. Or by an external heat source.
Salt can be used during the preparation, mixed in with the water used for boiling vegetables like potatoes ran out. Or in sauces. But also as a flavouring added right after preparing such as fries and chips. Often salt is found on tables too for people to add to their food to their own liking.
That's a lot of salt!

yeah, I'm not entirely sure what it is used for but, if you are in the smuggling business and you need the coin you don't ask to many questions.
