Golden ear rings

Treasure in your ears, for a lugubrious reason.

Golden ear rings

Have you ever seen the stereotype image of a sailor, fisherman, pirate, with golden ear rings? Have you ever wondered why? Just to carry around their Treasure? No, not only because of that, but it could've been a part of the reason.

Death

The answer is death, sailors and the like, wore, and still wear, golden ear rings. For when they got lost overboard. That if their body washed ashore somewhere, the local people could use the golden jewellery to pay for a funeral. And ear rings were the most likely to stay on the body, and wouldn't be a hinderance when wearing it on the ship while working.

Caught

Rose wiggled one of her ear rings out of her left ear. She had four in a row in her left ear, and three in her right. She weight the ring in her hand, doubting her decision for a moment. She didn't have any before she joined the pirate crew, the first two she had gotten from Peter those were still in her ears.

But these she had bought herself at some point, after the Smuggling run to Sperrgebiet. She still had some diamonds from that, but she couldn't get to those now. All those thoughts where running trough her head when she dropped the golden band on the desk of the pawnshop.

Rose had rather not sold the memories, but you couldn't live off memories. A body needs food, and after she had acquired some of that, she bought a train ticket, from France to the Netherlands. Having spend three quarters of the cash she had just got. She'd soon have to sell another of her rings, or find a job. The meeting with her mother was an utter disaster, to say it mildly, the bitch had refused to help Rose, and kicked her out while constantly swearing at her, about ruining her life. Rose wondered if some of her old school friends could help her a bit. Pirating had been fun, but it was over now. Anyway the train was heated, the seat more comfortable then a street bench, so let's get some sleep.

Rose had managed to safely exit the Thalys in Amsterdam, and get on a train to Utrecht, but there her luck was up. Without her even knowing that that was an option. Four police men had suddenly surrounded her, resistance or running was useless. Without any explanation she was handcuffed and pushed in the back of an unmarked car with blinded windows.

Ooo, what an interesting reason to have the gold earrings. Makes sense, though.
