The Guild of Cartographers
The Guild of Cartographers is ubiquitously known as "The Guild." The Guild is responsible for providing local, regional, and stellar maps. Information of the greater planet and system is carefully curated by the Guild in order to maintain their political and social dominance.
What the Guild is truly fabled for is its ability to produce encrypted maps and keys. These keys grant the location and access to Guild controlled depots, stockpiles, and havens (which can be purchased for a price). Map locations and keys are stored on encrypted data sticks. While they may be sold on secondary markets, they cannot be duplicated, and thus information traders speculate on the market.
While the accuracy of the maps is largely unquestioned, rumors are circulated about the guild's involvement in manipulated maps. A bribe paid to the guild can ensure a freebooter hideout remains undisclosed. Alternately, a larger bribe to the Guild can ensure a competitor's location is marked for bounty hunters.
Smaller organizations have formed to verify the legitimacy of the distributed maps, most of which the Guild is (also) rumored to indirectly crush.
