Seanchaí
Seanchaí (shan-a-he) are the keepers of ancient lore in Ireland and have a deep knowledge of Irish history, legends, superstitions and folklore. By the 1920s theatre and cinema has replaced these traditional storytellers in the towns and cities of Ireland but in the countryside they remain the principle source of entertainment. Here they recount their tales, seanchas (shan-a-has), to entranced listeners beside pub fireside’s in the winter and in packed market squares in the summer. Many are also talented musicians and are accomplished players of the fiddle, tin whistle or bodhrán (bawraan).
Seanchaí are by nature wanderers and most travel around Ireland with nothing but a bedroll and a musical instrument looking for new stories to add to their repertoire. While some travel in the company of tinkers or theatre troupes most tramp the byways of Ireland alone. They are often as happy to be paid with a good meal and a warm bed to sleep in as they are in coin. The exception is when folklorists from the Irish literary world ask them to recount their tales. These academics, and indeed any Investigators, who approach a seanchaí for information will be asked to pay well for the privilege.
Many seanchaí form relationships with cultists, witches and other malevolent mythological creatures and are not against undertaking work for them in return for learning some new secret that they can incorporate into a dark tale.
Seanchaí Investigators begin with improved Art & Craft (storytelling & a specific musical instrument) Folklore (occult), History and Cthulhu Mythos scores. Players must also choose whether their seanchaí Investigator has been taken by the Fairie as only those who have been in the Otherworld will be Fairie Blessed. All of this esoteric knowledge means that the Seanchaí Investigator starts with lowered SAN.
