Wispflames

Summary

Wispflames are an urban myth in many regions of the world under many names- Wisps, orbs, fae, Will O' Flame, and so on. All describe a phenomenon rarely seen by mortal eyes, in which bursts of magic occur on their own without intervention by people. These wisps as they are known can occur in a variety of colors and manifest as bright shining lights before petering away into nothing, leaving no trace. Some reports describe wispflames as starting fires, burns to people and animals, or freezing plants. Some areas where wispflames are reported are oftentimes subject to seemingly random bursts of foliage growth and die back seemingly without cause.   An incident in 6.301 on the banks of the former Red Rock River in Idaho blame a wildfire on the wispflames, stating that one caused a field to catch aflame and burn the town to the ground for a period of 6 days before it was finally controlled and eventually extinguished. Similar incidents were reported around the Markee Battery Factory in New York, 11,592, Ine's charging stations in Japan, 14,894, and around Solar Dragonflight wellsprings across Egypt from 16,830 to 17,725. In all incidents, wispflames were widely reported by the general populace prior to the fires occurring.

Historical Basis

There have been thousands of recorded sightings of wispflames throughout history, and it is strongly believed the phenomenon has a natural cause- magic corruption and pollution. Volatile magics latent in the environment, be they from natural sources or pollution, can combine to startling effects as are often described. These rare releases of magical energy have been primarily reported around magic wellsprings, production facilities for magic devices, and areas of past conflicts.   A recent uptick in wispflame sightings has occurred since the outbreak of the War of the Moon began, leading credence to the theory that the phenomenon is caused by magic pollutants. Laboratory testing has, on occasion, been able to replicate effects similar to witness accounts of wisps, though not exact in their same effects. It's believed that the phenomenon will be proven as a true natural occurrence, similarly to ball lightning, with further research and documentation.
