Rimewalkers

Summary

In the extreme north, far above the Arctic glacial line, there exist massive terrestrial predators of an unknown species. These animals cannot be seen easily, due to their white coats of long fur, and are only visible due to their coal black eyes, or faces covered in blood following a kill. With no fear of people, guns, or settlements, anything they come across are on the menu. Dogs and wolves are not a deterrent to them and often, according to the rumors, become prey themselves to the creatures and the first sign that something is in the area. Rimewalkers supposedly can attack from anywhere and will rip shelters to shreds and even attack people from the water, taking them below the waves and drowning them.   Supposed sightings of Rimewalkers claim the animals are extremely muscular, and capable of flipping snowmobiles, tearing apart tents and shelters, and can bite through bone. One supposed attack, since attributed to a Short-Tailed Cat, saw a victim with large gashes and claw marks across their body, mainly centered on the chest and neck. Prior to passing away, the fisherman produced an ink sketch of the animal, consistent with other reports.

Historical Basis

There are scant reports of attack by creatures anywhere near the size of the supposed 'Rimewalkers', with the few reports of death by animal attack at such northern latitudes often being attributed to the Needlecoat Wolf or bears. Many of the attacks from the water are thought to be the result of orcas who have become trapped in the ice starving and being so desperate for food they attack people. Despite a lack of evidence, many have tried to prove the existence of the Rimewalker, with some believing them to be an undiscovered species.   Due to harsh conditions, few manned missions are ever done into the Arctic, with most being conducted via drone. It is suspected by believers that noise from the drones may spook the animals, hence them not having been documented.

Cultural Reception

Many of the northern reaches of eastern Asia, Land of Gods, and many coastal islands in the arctic are considered by some dangerous to go out in alone, at night, or unarmed as a result of the urban legends as well as known megafauna, such as Needlecoat wolves, Short-Tailed Cats, predatory seals, and whales. Despite having never been proven, deterrents said to work on Rimewalkers are commonly used such as needlecoat urine, recordings of territorial dragons, and keeping food and waste far from camps during expeditions.

I love the drawing it's like someone's telling the person at a bar pulling out a piece of paper and doing a quick sketch to make there point. very cool
