Ichorlung
Transmission & Vectors
Ichorlung is a viral respiratory infection affecting dragonkin of all kinds, but known to be particularly dangerous to omnia. It is an airborne illness that can also be spread through particulates from coughing, sneezing, or fluids that have made contact with the respiratory system such as pus, saliva, and mucous. The virus cannot survive without a host for long, estimated to survive on surfaces for only a period of 8 to 12 hours.
Symptoms
Ichorlung causes extremely high production of mucous and infection of the lungs and respiratory system, causing immense difficulty and pain breathing. For dragons, infections of the air sacks can be particularly dangerous as they do not drain as easily and an infection can be hosted there for months at a time, causing repeated reinfection of the lungs. The virus also causes high fevers, low appetite, difficulty swallowing, and frequent coughing, sneezing, and loss of control of the flame pallet, a structure in the throat of dragons preventing their fire from entering the throat.
Moderate and severe infections of the disease can cause high amounts of fluid to build up in the lungs, leading to asphyxiation, pneumonia, and poor oxygenation. Pulmonary edema, as it worsens, can also cause heart issues for both omnia and dragons, leading to arrest. Many dragons that attempt to clear their lungs have been confused for being infected with rabies, due to frothy pus and mucous being expelled from the mouth and nose.
Treatment
Effective treatments for the disease in the modern era are not known, due to the sudden resurgence of the disease. It is not yet known what medications may be effective at treating it, VS merely treating the symptoms of it. In the past, infections of ichorlung were mainly treated with quarantine of sick individuals until they recovered on their own, if at all. Such individuals were often shunned in draconic society due to a fairly high risk of those who did recover becoming carriers of the virus. In some cases, draconic storytelling tells of severe cases being treated with controlled puncturing of the lungs to drain fluid, though few of these records make mention of patients surviving the procedure without reforming their bodies afterward.
Prevention
All corpses from areas where Batterion has been active are to be presumed as infectious with multiple diseases. Members of the public are encouraged to NOT engage with Batterion or areas they have passed through. Evacuate immediately under any suspicion of Batterion's presence.-Emergency alert bulletin issued by Great Plains Disease Prevention Centers.
- DO NOT enter restricted areas. Evacuate all high risk zones as quickly as possible- leave all nonessential belongings.
- DO wear gloves, mask, and face shield at all times in areas with potential exposure. If you believe you have been exposed, contact local medical authorities as soon as possible.
- Quarantine all potentially exposed people and animals.
- DO NOT handle or attempt to remove corpses from moderate to high risk areas.
- REPORT all corpses to emergency services.
Reports of disease have been indicated for the following areas: Michigan, Great Plains, upstate New York, and the Land of Gods. IT IS NOT KNOWN IF THESE DISEASES CAN INFECT HUMANOIDS. ASSUME INFECTION IS POSSIBLE. All sick individuals are to be assumed infectious. If you present with the following symptoms, call emergency services for immediate quarantine:-EAS bulletin issued by Michigan Emergency Services.-Fever
-Difficulty breathing
-Skin discoloration
-Yellow to white fluid from the lungs
-Sudden cough
-Muscle pain
-Sudden confusion and or memory issues
All individuals are encouraged to wear mask and gloves in public. Isolate and evacuate from infected areas. Wash all exposed skin with soap and hot water prior to eating and drinking.
History
The disease is largely unknown to modern medical science, thought to have died out prior to the modern era. Reports of the disease, prior to the War of the Moon, were solely relegated to old draconic history. Following the rise of Batterion by Hilathu, many dragons and omnia have begun experiencing symptoms of a disease at this time presumed to be ichorlung itself if they have survived initial contact with them or Batterion's plumes of bodily fluids and gasses.
As the disease as not yet been studied by modern science, it is currently unknown if it can infect humanoids or other animals. Erring on the side of caution, many governments have assumed that the disease can be spread across the zoologic barrier. Northern parts of Great Plains, New York, and areas that have made contact with Batterion have begun to burn the corpses of all people, animals, and dragons suspected to be infected with the disease. Michigan and the Land of Gods have issued orders from the pantheon to burn all corpses above the frostline. Below the frostline, corpses are permitted for burial, but only at a depth of 10 feet and after being treated with disinfectant.
