Funerary Charr

Manufacturing process

Bison, moose, elk, caribou, or even Wool-Hide Elephant game is commonly used for the offering, with a leg or thigh cut whole from the carcass. Other meat portions will be used as normal for regular meals or even feed for War Wolves. The meat is skinned and dressed, heavily spiced far beyond the tolerances of ordinary man. This is to ensure that the scent carries far on the wind, to capture the attention of ghosts, who are believed to have lessened senses than the living. Once sufficiently prepared, the meat is cooked until blackened to the point of being inedible, and placed upon an altar or shrine along the path to Limbo's Crossing.

Significance

Funerary Charr is a type of roasted and charred meat commonly found within the Pack of Ferventi or Werewolves' funerary traditions, and in association with the Festival of Death as an offering to Shia, the God of Death. As per tradition, meat is heavily spiced and ritualistically adorned with religiously significant herbs, death's bloom, and in some cases oils and fats. The portion will then be roasted and blackened as a sacrificial offering.   Among both groups, the meal is not meant to be eaten, but is instead given as an offering to the dead as a way of symbolically drawing out their Ghosts on the path to Limbo's Crossing. It is commonly only prepared on known routes that ghosts will take, and often used in cases where a loved one's body was not recovered, or their ghost cannot be found. The offering will be left on the altars it was placed on to decay, and if still there when another group needs to make use of the space, is commonly disposed of by way of burial nearby or even under the shrine itself.   Different sects of Ferventi's following, as well as different families among werewolves, will commonly have their own recipes for funerary charr. If being prepared for a specific individual, the spices used are oftentimes changed to be that person's favorites or even follow in ling proportionally with a favorite recipe of theirs. In some sects, it is dictated by tradition that the meat must come from game caught by a young hunter on their first hunt, or the first they have personally led. In times of lean hunting, it was much more common for an animal to be ritualistically sacrificed to prepare the food, such as a retired horse or war wolf, though this practice has long since fallen out of favor.
