Disaster of Despair

Disaster of Despair is a great example of a 'From Nobody to Nightmare' trope in action, an entity that sprung from a regional threat into number six on the UN Supernatural Security Committee's list of Apocalypse-Level threats. All of that resulted from a single, failed attempt to eliminate it by the Supernatural Public Safety Commission.   It is also famous for managing to become... famous - but among the mundanes, even if the name and nature of it remains unknown to them. It is, after all, believed to be the primary reason for Aokigahara's forest reputation as a 'suicide forest'.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

It is not exactly known how the Disaster of Despair looks like. The surviving recordings from the failed subjugation attempt portray a massive presence (estimated at around 10 square miles) covering the sky over the forest with a black abyss dotted with numberless eyes and mouths, speaking in hundreds of voices while attempting to drive everyone present in the forest into suicide by endlessly berating them, showing incredible and instinctual understanding of their personality and life history.   This stands in direct contradiction to intel gathered before the attack, which described the Disaster of Despair as a young woman with black hair and black eyes, approaching random people in the forest and engaging them in a talk that inevitably led the targetted person to commit suicide within the next twenty four hours. Theories on this range from the human-like form being a form of magical projection to the SPSC mistaking a particularly powerful warlock (perhaps a Terminal Stage one) for their god.   Some additional theories imply that the sky-presence is a form of magical influence of the Disaster of Despair, making the human form to be the Disaster's true form. However, it wasn't seen ever since the failed attack.

Special abilities

Exact scope of the Disaster's power is unknown, and presumably buried in the SPSC's archives. The recordings of the battle itself were never made public, aside from one or two pictures of Despair's sky-form. What is known about the Disaster of Despair's capabilities is its capability of generating an aura nicknamed the Despair Event Horizon.   When attacked, the Despair generated a magical field estimated to be around 100km radius around its present position. It also immediately caused every initiate born at 1st of January that was present within that radius to cause immediate suicide by any means available, while facing the direction of Aokigahara Forest.   The field had a second, smaller zone (approximately 10 km around it) where it was strong enough to cause non-initiates born on 1st of January to kill themself. Worst of all, exactly twenty minutes later, every initiate within 105km radius and every non-initiate within 10.5km radius that were born on 2nd of January has committed suicide too, together with people born on 1st of January that happened to be within the 5-0.5km zone ommitted by the Despair Event Horizon's first stage. Twenty minutes later, the same thing happened to every person born on 3rd of January, within 110km and 11km radius.   By the time the SPSC's attack group was effectively eliminated and the Despair's attack ceased, the effect reached 1st of February, and the effective zone of 250/25km. The deaths of the mundanes present in the area during the attack were primarily covered by the creation of Shades. The official casualty list of the attack estimated the overall number of deaths at around 68 000 people.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

No one knows exactly when Disaster of Despair came to be, nor when it became active in ther matters of the world. The suicides in the Aokigahara Forest date back for more than a century, however the first reports of sightings came out in 2002, in the middle of the period of a raise in suicide cases in Aokigahara Forest. Its presence wasn't officially confirmed until 2012, with years of patient attempts to narrow down its exact location in preparation for the subjugation attempt.   The attack eventually happened in 2021, which resulted in a cataclysmic failure, with Disaster of Despair retaliating to the attack by generating a field that induced people to commit immediate suicide within its range of effect, leading to the assault group being entirely annihilated, with the exception of the magisters that were leading it, who managed to flee the forest in time.   Ever since then, the Disaster of Despair has made its presence in the Aokihagara Forest much more active, leading to the whole forest being declared an Exclusion Zone by the Supernatural Public Safety Commission. Despair appears to not be interested in leaving it, limiting itself to preying on mundanes with pre-existing suicidal tendencies.
