History
The history of the Sylvaranth family began with an ambitious half-elven merchant by the name of Hughnin Sylvaranth arriving in Gatestone in 28 AD via extraplanar travel, Hughnin had sought to take his wealth to a new frontier and seek opportunity. Hughnin quickly picked up on the kindling mining industry in the First Valley, he bought a plot of land at the base of Crasta Mora and established his own colony of miners to begin digging for precious gems and metals. His success, much like the success of the other entrepreneurs in the industry was instantaneous. A wealth of gemstone and metal ores were discovered early on and as word got out, Hughnin's small colony began to grow with an influx of labourers looking for work. A decade passed and Hughnin's small mining colony had grown into a small township best known for its extraction of Moonstones; a semi-precious gemstone with a beautiful white-to-blue sheen which saw popular use in jewelry. With the success of his mines, Hughnin became officially inducted as townmaster of the small township which he named Sylmor. The next few years saw the wealth of the Sylvaranth family plateau. They struggled to find any larger veins of gems or metals which were in demand in Gatestone and were forced to withhold their stockpiles to drive the price of their Moonstones up to compensate. Sylmor's growth also came to a halt at this time, without news of any new opportunity for work in the mines, labourers traveled to other nearby towns like Cappleton or Kaistor to find jobs instead. The Sylvaranths remained wealthy but Hughnin began to despair, without the mining industry what could the township rely on for income? Another few decades passed and Sylmor struggled on. Hughnin welcomed his first and only son Thoradin into the world; the first noble-born Sylvaranth of the family tree. The birth of Thoradin excited the population of Sylmor and drew some interest back to the Sylvaranth house from the capital, not enough to spark a new venture for the small town, but there was interest taken in young Thoradin by smaller noble houses who wished to move up in the world by allying themselves with the Sylvaranths through marriage. Thoradin was raised to continue his father's legacy, Hughnin didn't end up having any more sons or daughters so Thoradin had a vast weight of responsibility placed upon his shoulders which he took to as best he could. When Hughnin passed away in 136 AD, Thoradin took to the running of the town and married the daughter from the noble house of Nemyr, a young lady with a wicked sense of humour named Vadania. Vadania's dowry helped pay for more workers to expand the mining operations deeper into Crasta Mora which earned the Sylvaranths a small increase in wealth for a time. Inspired by the minor success, Thoradin thought that delving deeper into Crasta Mora may yield more precious gemstones which would revitalise Sylmor's economy so he had the miners continue to delve deeper into the mountain caverns which resulted in the discovery of a large coal deposit which the Sylvaranths took to extracting. The coal mining isn't as profitable as the Moonstone extraction was, but it is enough for Sylmor to still be standing today, where some of its neighbours are ghost towns. The Sylvaranths survive as a minor noble house who have just about managed to not slip into obscurity, they are known mostly for their production of coal nowadays, but some still remember the Slyvaranth Moonstone Mine days and speak about it with pride.Remove these ads.
