Sorcerer Variant

Introduction

Variant Sorcerer is a set of rules designed to increase the versatility of the base sorcerer in D&D 5e. Traditionally, sorcerers in 5e are limited both by a set number of spell slots per spell level, a poor conversion between spell slots and sorcery points, and a set number of spells known, which can sometimes make it difficult to adapt to changing circumstances during gameplay. The Variant Sorcerer rules seek to address this issue by combining sorcerer points and spell slots into a single pool. This means that sorcerers can now cast spells of any level using a flexible resource that adapts to their needs, rather than being restricted by a fixed number of spell slots. With the Variant Sorcerer rules, sorcerers can choose to cast a few powerful spells or a multitude of weaker ones, giving them a new level of tactical flexibility on the battlefield.

Spell Costs

When the sorcerer wants to cast a spell, they must spend a number of sorcery points equal to the Sorcery Point Cost outlined. For example, casting a 2nd-level spell would cost 3 sorcery points, while casting a 5th-level spell would cost 7 sorcery points. The sorcerer can choose to cast spells of any level as long as they have the required number of sorcery points.

Sorcery Points Per Level

Just like with the base sorcerer, these sorcery points are regained at the end of a long rest. This means that sorcerers need to manage their pool of sorcery points carefully, especially during long and challenging adventures where they may not have the opportunity to take a long rest. Variant Sorcerers cannot know or (up)cast a spell at a level higher than their "Max Level Spell Known."

The sorcerer's pool of sorcery points increases as they level up. This allows them to cast more spells and use more metamagic options as they become more experienced and powerful. The number of sorcery points a player has per level is as follows:
