Mr. Mysteries' So-True Histories Episode 22 - Even the Dimensions have Pockets
Hello Eager Learners! I am Mr. Mysteries, formerly of the Learned League, and this is my KARENcast series on the history of our Reality, Reality 69. Our last episode focused on examples of the various existential threats that await a chance to inflict themselves upon our planet. Our episode today will concentrate on some of the more well-known extradimensional spaces that are attached and part of our Reality.
It can be confusing for many to try to understand the distinction between dimensions and Realities. Realities are specifically clusters of existence that have branched from the Reality tree at a Great Deviation Point (GDP). A given Reality consists of one or more dimensions that may be loosely or tightly bound to each other. In many ways it is easiest to extend the tree analogy. If Reality Prime is the trunk of the Reality Tree, and each deviated Reality is a branch on that tree, dimensions could be considered the twigs that grow from that branch.
Dimensions are typically smaller and stranger variations of the Reality they grow from. It is not understood exactly what causes naturally forming dimensions, although it is well known that certain powerful entities and magical rites and force the creation of very small and limited pocket dimensions. The vast majority of dimensions are limited in scale and scope compared to their base Reality. Admittedly this may be a fairly negligible distinction as a pocket dimension the size of our solar system is technically limited, but that limit is so high that for most applications it can be ignored, however most dimensions are significantly smaller than that.
It is a noteworthy consideration that only some of the most powerful magics and entities in our Reality is capable of causing even a small pocket dimension to form. If the other dimensions, particularly those that appear to be an infinite as our own Reality, are also created by some being, the scope of power of that entity is certainly something to be concerned about.
The first verified stable extradimensional space was discovered in 1962 by a MIT/Havard physics team that was able to open a temporary portal into a relatively small pocket dimension that was originally designated UD01 but has since become known as Deepwood. This dimension has been mapped to occupy a dome roughly 600m (1968.5 ft) high and 2.5km (1.55 mi) in diameter. The Deepwood is visually indistinct from any random part of the deepest parts of the Black Forest in Germany. There is a permanent thick fog that obscures from the ground up to a rough height of 1.2m (4 ft). A limited spread of flora and fauna have been shown to be originally derived from common stock of our Reality but with a genetic drift indicating a significant period of isolation was experienced by the species. This leads many experts to believe that at one point some 1200-1500 years ago there was a stable open connection, or that the dimensional pocket was formed about that time. Deepwoods has proven remarkably stable since it's discovery, but due to it's limited size has only been of scientific interest and not subject to commercial development. It was shortly after the discovery of Deepwoods that the superhero Gatekeeper appeared in the news. This is notable given that Gatekeeper is the first known Neohuman capable of opening gateways between dimensions. The coincidence of this timing has always been a subject of much speculation.
The most well-known of the pocket dimensions of our Reality would be that of Gothic, a relatively large and stable dimension currently used as a prison under the administration of NeoSecurity Partnerts, Ltd. (a known PAPA subsidiary) in partnership with the various GASPs. This bizarre space might be best described as an ancient medieval castle folded in on itself until every door and window only opens on to another room or hallway. It has proven a convenient place to keep Neohuman and Exo prisoners, and allowed the commutation of many death sentences that came out of the Neohuman riots of the Chaos.
One of the largest dimensions known is referred to many as the Astral or Spiritual plane. This dimension seems to directly correlate point to point with our base Reality and appears to be closely tied to many magical and religious studies. Some studies support the idea that this Astral dimension is the medium by which magical energies travel while avoiding obstacles within our own Reality space.
Another set of attached dimensions might be best classified as "moral" dimensions. These large stable pocket dimensions often coincide with the common depictions of various "heavens" and "hells" from various religions. It is worth noting that there is some as-yet unidentified effect that makes it substantially difficult for non-believers of a given religion to enter many of these dimensions. One notable exception to this is Torturus, an interesting expression of an "Ironic Hell" that seems to capture and process manifested "souls" that do not transition to a specific dimension for their beliefs. The scope of the discussion of souls it is likely to vast for my modest little show, but there are many interesting doctoral dissertations on the subject that are worth investigating if you are interested.
As one may have noticed from earlier descriptions, some dimensions seem to be broadly accessible from anywhere in our Reality, while others appear to be tightly bound to specific geographical locations. This appears to greatly impact the ease or even possibility that a particular dimension can be accessed. Gothic, for instance, does not appear to have a connection to anywhere on Earth, so it is quite difficult to access except via the rift generator controlled by NeoSecurity Partners, Ltd. Deepwoods seems to be easier to access from any similar forest on Earth, while the Astral dimension appears to be accessible via deep meditation in some cases from anywhere.
Both Heirophant Holdings (HH) and Cheshire Holdings, Acquisitions & Developements (CHAD) are actively engaged in discovering new dimensions and exploring them with an eye towards resource development. These explorations have lead to a slow trickle of extradimensional entities immigrating to Earth. Generally lumped in with the extraterrestrials and referred to as Exos, these unique beings have proven to be an interesting addition to society.
From the Bulrathi, to the Myrneans, to the Pale of the Grey dimension, Exos have had dramatic influences on the development of our Reality. Our next episode will focus on these interactions and their impact.
