Mr. Mysteries' So-True Histories Episode 16 - The Stability Committee
Hello Eager Learners! I am Mr. Mysteries, formerly of the Learned League, and this is my KARENcast series on the history of our Reality, Reality 69. On our last episode we were looking at a period of time after the Great Deviation Point known as the Chaos. We will be concluding that topic today.
As the events of the Neohuman riots continued to escalate, some terrifyingly powerful Neohumans classified as "Reality Benders" began to appear. These powerful Neos could seemingly rewrite some basic rules of reality, at least on a local scale. The damage that these Neohumans could wreak was obvious to everyone, yet there did not seem to be a ready means to combat or resist them.
Unbeknownst to almost everyone, a coiterie of reality benders had already begun planning for this eventuality. Very little is known about this group, although there have been a few individuals have stepped forward claiming that they are or were invovled in this early group. These individuals have failed to be able to provide any evidence to support this position, however, so most people tend to discount these stories.
What is well known is that on November 1st, 1962 at precisely noon GMT, the group that is known as the Stability Committee asserted the new Baseline Reality based on the Reciprocal Rules of 69. The Stability Committee did not do this via a press announcement or some other form of declaration. They simply were from that point forward, as were the Rules. These rules did not require enforcement as, from the moment of their creation, they were simply statements of truth in the world, on the same level as the Earth orbits the Sun or Gravity attacts to the greatest local mass.
As they had been acting in violation of the Rules, the escalating conflict between national militaires under the power of the Nation-states and the large Neohuman group immediately ceased. Personally I was present at one of these altercations, and it was an amazing site to see. In the middle of a heated confrontation between the Marvelous Militia and US Army forces just outside of San Francisco. A few people had already been injured on both sides, and bullets and energy blasts were flying. Suddenly everyone knew the Rules, just like they knew how to breathe. The Neohumans dispersed, still angry and bitter. The military stood down and slowly withdrew, confused and frustrated.
The next six months saw many attempts to violate these new rules, although they proved to be inviolate, although in a remarkably subtle way. While these plans for large scale or military actions would be planned and organized, those primary motivators seemed to get distracted by other priorities, life events, or just a general lack of will to fully engage in action. While the Rules prevented large scale violence, it was not a solution for small scale interactions. This lead to many ongoing segregation attempts between humans and Neohumans.
Calls for a new place for Neohumans to call home were rampant, although many Neohumans had no interest in leaving the countries and societies they had been born into. Calls for both more and less involvement by the Stability Committee were common as well. To this end, perhaps, the strict anonymity the members of the Committee maintain was a detremint. It was towards this end that the Stability Committee caused the floating island of Avskildhet to exist. This island appeared on March 14th and was fully formed by March 19th, 1965.
We will explore this truly unique island and it's history in our next episode.
