Blood In The Water
Life in the sea is very different than that on land. The sea demands all of a persons attention and will to survive. A weak willed individual, well they are picked off quickly by the creatures that live in the ocean. For while the storms that strike the world above do not touch the waters of the sea, the oceans has its own force, and speaks its own displeasure with those who dwell within its depths. Oceanic currents, deadly plants, underwater volcanoes that erupt with hardly any notice, one does not live in the ocean for a quiet life. And if you find a way to survive the oceans moods, than beware the creatures who see you as food.
Those who do make their life in the sea are strong. They have become like the ocean itself, beautiful and deadly in every way. Those who live in small countries, like Tatylanea, live a life mostly protected from the seas watery rage, but where the creatures can not reach, other merfolk attack. Thus even these places of safety, are armed with veteran warriors. Their gates may be of the most beautiful coral, and their walls sculpted by stonemasons, but those gates are covered in spikes and those walls strong points of defense. Where in the ocean only the strong survive, there you can depend upon the knowledge that even the most beautiful object is deadly.
Those who don't live in protected safety, survive on their warrior instincts. Every day is a battle, and for those who live in sea, they exalt in it. They yearn for those battles, for the chance to prove themselves against a worthy opponent, and seek out deadly creatures to fight against. And yet even these groups of blood driven merfolk abide by a simple rule, the sea must remain in balance. They respect those they fight, and many foes are released to fight another day. For the excitement of a kill, is nothing compared to the rapture ones feels knowing a fiercer battle is just beyond the current.
