Northern Wastes Encounters

Good- 7-8
  • The party comes across a caravan of pilgrims out to see a variant of the aurora that only comes out once a decade. They'll gladly take on anyone who wants to join, and they can share valuable tips about food caches and shelter in the nearby area.
  • Find a natural hot springs
  • In the long darkness of the arctic night, the party sees a glow like the sun in the distance. An entire farming village in the midst of the vast tundra sits beneath a warm and brightly glowing stone.
Neutral- 5-6
  • The player's suddenly find their path blocked by a frozen lake, and must either go around adding time to their journey, or complete a skill challenge to cross safely.
  • An old sailing ship has been locked in the ice for generations. Only the skeletons of the crew remain on board, along with a hold full of gold and treasure. At it's center, the skull of a dragon. The treasure, however, is cursed. Should one piece of gold leave the hold and make its way topside, the skeletons come to life, and should that piece of gold leave the ship, a giant skeletal dragon shall rise from within the ship and murder any who steals its treasure - to which it has bound it's eternal life by way of its ancient greed.
  • orc encounters the party stark naked and raving mad. He’s quite likely suffering from hypothermia. If the party can help him survive he will lead them to a village for refuge and a grateful family that has been searching for him.
  • The party crossing the ice comes across a half frozen river. The ice has cracked and several small floating ice pieces float downstream. Large enough to hold 4 them as they cross, they must hop from island to island to cross.
  • Crystal Dragon- CR 2, 5, 12, 19, scales becoming white and then increasingly translucent and reflective as they age, horns change color with mood, they are stargazers, Will take care of abandoned dragons of other types, friendly and optimistic, but very opposed to destructive forces. FTD pg 169.
Dangerous- 3-4
  • A band of orc raiders, the chief is on a polar bear.
  • A white ooze is disguised as a snow drift and your party has wandered into it.
  • A dragon flies over, causing an avalanche, DC15 Dex save or be trapped under the snow.
  • Polar bear- CR 2
Deadly- 1-2
  • White Dragon- CR 6, 13, 20, most primal and animalistic of the dragons, freezes its prey and saves them for later, keeping its greatest foes prisoners in ice as trophies, loner dragon, hide its treasure under ice which often includes ship bows walrus’s tusks and other arctic treasure as well as gold.
  • Frost Giant- CR 8
  • Yeti- CR 3 or 9. MM pg 305.
  • Remorhaz- CR 3-11, tunnel under ice and waits for vibrations on the surface. MM pg 258.
