Dreamweavers
Dreamweavers started as simple, tree-beings that fed on psychic energy. With willow-like branches that invited animals to shelter there and provided limited protection, it was incredibly successful at drawing in prey. Rather than killing the creatures to provide physical nutients, the trees instead provided a sense of peace and safety. Sadly, this did often lead to the demise of the original creature, with shelter then going to the predator and so on. Predators however would often leave fairly quickly to find food and once they had been at the roots, the tree would not longer attract the prey animals.
Over time, the trees developed the ability to maintain some of the psychic nutrients they were acquiring and developed some rudamentary skills. They learned to attract the prey animals and to disuade the predators. The smarter prey animals began to make homes or nexts around the trees. Predators learned to avoid them. The more prey animals providing energy the more the tree could attract and repel.
The trees growing near enough for the roots to connect began to share the psychic enery they were acquiring as well; keeping each other safe and teaching each other the best skills for preservation and growth.
Today, the dreamweavers and the intelligent species work together. Dreamweavers feed on the psychic energy of those who shelter beneath them and in return they provide a new sort of shelter.
Rather than physical protection, dreamweavers now provide psychic protection. When under a tree, no psychic attack is effective. During the primative waring years this was imperative. In these more enlightened and peaceful times the dreamweavers assist the intelligent species with honing and refining their psychic abilities and are renowned instructors in the art. In consuming the psychic energy, they also ensure the mental health and well-being of the psychic community as those born with the abilities learn to control them.
