Information
The two footsoldier captives you took are starving and low in morale, and they're easily swayed into cooperating after seeing that the motley band you're leading is well-fed. They reveal the following facts, which your scouting over the next few days seems to confirm:Seven months ago the human Shoftiel the Golden, princess and duchess of the empire of Cheliax, received a vision from Minauros, archdevil of greed. Shoftiel conscripted an army and drove them West across the sea in pursuit of her vision: a bountiful paradise laying broken and unprotected, ripe for conquering. Most of her conscripts considered Shoftiel insane, but after four months of sailing through fields of ice their ships made landfall in the broken terrain north of the Wyrmfort, which Shoftiel promptly seized.
One month ago an army of Rakvalinor elves, hobgoblins, devils, and yugoloths emerged from the Dreaming Marsh, took control of the lookout towers to the West, and laid siege to the Wyrmfort, cutting Shoftiel off from the lands to the South. The army follows the banner of the archdevil Glasya, a rival of Minauros.
The captives you took are from a Cheliax platoon still guarding the lookout tower to the Southeast of the fortress (near the burned village you caught the captives in), which has been cut off from the Wyrmfort by the siege. Although the platoon's morale is low, they are led by a devil named Germael who won't hesitate to kill deserters, and they're unlikely to surrender.
Additionally:
Roving bands of demons have been stalking the Dragon-watched plains to the Southwest of the Wyrmfort for as long as the Cheliax army has been here. They have caused trouble for both the Cheliax army and Glasya's besiegers. The demons are associated with the demon lord Baphomet, and take bestial forms.
Most of the Wyrmfort is underground, as befits a fortress designed to defend against dragons. Shoftiel has only been able to secure control of the surface and the first few hypogean levels; the deeper levels are under the control of monsters.
Shoftiel has sent messages requesting more reinforcements from Cheliax, and has had her magicians open gates to the Nine Hells of Baator and bring forth devils to assist her. The duchess has additionally raised elven bodies from nearby barrows as undead, and hired platoons of yugoloths from the Bleak Eternity of Gehenna.
Shoftiel has sent multiple platoons into the Dragonbarrow mountains, none of which have returned.
Some of the elves following the party provide the following additional information:
The Dragonbarrow mountains were once the capital of the ancient draconic empire of Lócë Mólië which ruled over a vast swath of Rakvalinor. After the empire became decadent and began to decline, the elves rebelled and drove the dragons into the deep mountains. The elves never fully defeated the dragons, but instead constructed the Wyrmfort and a series of lookout towers to provide a first defense against the dragons ever returning.
Wyrmfort patrols were strictly forbidden from venturing into the Dragonbarrow mountains. Rumors did circulate at the fort of rebellious elves who went into the mountains, and it was said that the Wyrmfort commanders callously abandoned them without sending in rescue parties.
