Taldrinor

Pronunciation: tal-DRIN-or

Map Index: F-2, F-3, F-4

Location: Central Beorlan in southern Palanlad

Geography: The vast expanse of grassland that stretches across southern Palanlad is known today as Taldrinor. Covered by short drought-tolerant grasses, this land of great rolling plains and hills teems with wildlife. This landscape also contains a small number of flat-topped buttes and one large mesa rising abruptly from the gentle, sloping plains. Often used as watchpoints or temporary encampments by the competing Ranfaroth and Turoch tribes, they offer broad views of the surrounding landscape. The largest mesa, Taldruon, serves as a magnet for combat as the competing Ranfaroth and Turoch battle for control.

Few trees live in Taldrinor except for near sources of water such as rivers and watering holes. The southernmost area of Taldrinor lies adjacent to the wasteland of Vornlithdor. The skies appear gray and threatening here as great volumes of ash are frequently sent aloft by the great volcano Krakurod.

Primary Population: Ranfaroth, Turoch
Secondary Population: None
Minor Population:  Gnolls

Climate: A subtropical climate prevails leaving the plains with mild winters that have moderate amounts of rainfall. Summers are hot and dry, with only rare thunderstorms to provide moisture. With this summertime drought comes hard times for wildlife. Most of the rivers and watering holes dry up during the hot days of summer. The few water sources remaining draw in wildlife from far away.

Wildlife:  The grassy plains of Taldrinor are home to magnificent herds of antelopes, wildebeests, and gazelles. Sleek leopards stalk the herds, especially near watering holes and forested areas along creeks and rivers. Jackals creep stealthily, seeking to surprise and catch rabbits and small rodents. During spring and fall, large flights of migratory birds pass through the grasslands on their way to their summer and winter homes. Eagles and vultures also soar the skies, looking for their next meal, as long-legged herons and egrets stalk minnows and frogs along the shores of watering holes.

Humanoids: Taldrinor remains a battleground between the nomadic Ranfaroth  centaur tribes and the warlike Turoch. As mortal enemies, they ride against each other, ever seeking ways to defeat their enemies. While Taldrinor lies adjacent to the Turoch homeland of Vrok Mul and could be considered as their territory, the Ranfaroth give them no quarter and strike with swift raids into these lands.

Monsters: Over the grassy plains of Taldrinor Rocs, Griffons, and giant eagles bring danger from the sky to creatures who fail to keep a proper watch. On the ground, the presence of monsters remains a real threat as monstrosities and aberrations often enter the plains from the fell lands of Ogrukk, the Grozhak Wasteland, Vornlithdor, and the mountains of Kraguk and Goraukoros.

History: The Great Cataclysm had limited physical impact on Taldrinor’s terrain. While the earth shook, it caused little lasting damage. However, the chaos storms that swept across the land devastated its human populations. The large, nomadic human tribes that once filled the plains were decimated by the chaos storms with the majority of the survivors ending up terribly corrupted as they were transformed into the Ranfaroth  and Turoch.

Today: Taldrinor remains a resilient landscape full of life, yet peril awaits those who lack caution. While nature passes through its yearly cycles, the long enmity of the  Ranfaroth  and Turoch continue to make these plains a place of danger.
