Sea of Sorrow

Map Index: C7-C8, D7-D10, E7-E9, F9

Location: East of Aorlan and north of Nhulokkarnum

Description: The Sea of Sorrow, lies to the north of Nhulokkarnum, and provides a haunting reminder of the power of the Great Cataclysm. As the immense tradgedy struck, the entire part of the continent north of Ansharr sank beneath its murky depths in a matter of weeks. Now this shallow sea contains only a desolate expanse of water where the echoes of lost civilizations mingle with the mournful cries of the sea. The depth of the sea varies but rarely does it exceed more than 60 feet.

Water Characteristics: These saline waters remain cold year-round with only a bit of warming during the summer months.

Geography and Geology: Navigating the Sea of Sorrow can be treacherous, especially along its eastern perimeter. Here the prevailing winds, combined with powerful currents from the northeast, push the deep waters of the Great Northern Sea onto the shallow Sea of Sorrow. Sailors claim to have seen monstrous waves that reached heights of over 40 feet in this area.

Some of the old highlands of the drowned lands also pose navigation hazards as they now form dangerous shoals full of sharp rocks, capable of ripping open ship hulls or causing them to founder.

Primary Population: None
Secondary Population: None
Minor Population: None

Climate and Weather Patterns: The Sea of Sorrow has a reputation for bad weather. Fog commonly covers the sea in early morning hours. Despite what looks like fair sunny weather, conditions can change rapidly with sudden storms seeming to come out of nowhere.

Marine Life: Though the Sea of Sorrow teems with fish, few fishing vessels ply these waters. Large pods of whales feed here during the summer months.

Cultural & Historical Significance: Tales abound of ghostly apparitions haunting the sea, the restless spirits of those who perished in the cataclysm. Beneath the surface, danger lurks in the form of unknown creatures, their presence hinted at by eerie lights that dance in the darkness, beckoning sailors to their doom.

The Great Cataclysm saw the populated lands of the Anbari Federation and the realms of Adar, Arndor, Cearr, Densharr, Kor, Pelendor, Shin’ar, and Utlan Tor’va all sink below sea level and become lost to history. Some survivors, principally from the western lands, managed to escape by ship to Aorlan to begin new lives.
