Pelagann Hills

Pronunciation: PELL-a-gan

Map Index: G-5

Location: Southeastern Beorlan, Hills in southwestern Bhoras Desert

Geography: Set in the southwestern part of the Bhoras Desert, the windswept low hills sit mostly barren. The reddish yellow to light yellowish brown rocky landscape sits quiet except for the occasional howl of the wind. The hills contain few plants leaving a bleak landscape of weathered sandstone hills and sandy valleys. The dry soil produces dust when the wind blows.

Primary Population: None
Secondary Population: None
Minor Population: Skryx

Climate: The tropical weather remains sweltering hot year-round with very little rain.

Wildlife: Little large wildlife exists in these arid forsaken lands, and the lack of surface water severely limits how long wildlife can remain in this arid environment. Smaller animals such as desert rats and mice, lizards of many types, and poisonous snakes shelter underground during the scorching daylight hours, waiting for the cooler evening temperatures when great hordes of beetles and other insects emerge to feed.

Humanoids: Due to the scores of undead, few humanoids other than the Skryx live here. The transformation by the chaos storms that transformed humans into the Skryx, also must have given them some quality that causes most undead to ignore them.

Monsters: The primary dangerous creatures in these hills are the undead. Skeletons, wights, and a variety of incorporeal creatures are common.

History: The Pelagann Hills were once an inhabited part of the Kishari Empire that had the great fortress of Zoradan in its midst. Standing on a hilltop in the heart of the hills, the fortress provided protection for the whole region.

During the Great War, a massive battle took place here between a large army from the Movorian Empire and a much smaller army of the defending Kishari Empire. The Kishari Empire’s army was reeling from previous losses and needed to make a resolute stand to halt the invasion. Hoping the steep terrain would help negate Movoria’s feared chariot units, the Kishari Emperor chose the hills of Pelagann to stop the invaders. However, even without the chariots, Movoria’s superior forces proved too much for the defenders and forced them to retreat and make a final stand in the great fortress of Zoradan. Here a final battle commenced, and for several days the two sides fought before the Movorians finally broke through the walls and the fortress fell.

With the destruction of the last significant Kishari army, the Movorians had a final victory within their grasp when the Great Cataclysm struck. Closely following a series of devastating earthquakes, a great line of Chaos Storms tore through the whole area. These corrupting storms struck while an estimated 20,000 to 30,000 recently killed soldiers remained unburied in the battlefields. The interaction of masses of unburied dead with the chaos unleashed by the storms trapped these recently departed souls for all time in the land of the living. Thus, hordes of undead now roam the hills, with most of them lingering near the battlefields where they died.

The great ruined fortress of Zoradan stands today as an especially cursed area as the fortress contained a large number of refugees at the time it fell and the Movorians are believed to have slaughtered everyone who they found inside.

Today: The Pelagann Hills lie silent and desolate, having been transformed from a thriving empire full of life into a sad and empty land of the dead. The ruins of the once mighty Zoradan Fortress stand today as a somber reminder of the dark deeds from the past. Situated on a prominent barren hill, the outlines of its great stone walls and towers still stand tall the dust filled air.
