Malenthrar Peninsula
Pronunciation: ma-len-THRAR
Map Index: G-2
Location: On the coast of southwestern Beorlan
Geography: Malenthrar consists of a great volcanic peninsula connected by a rocky bridge of land formed by a great lava flow. The whole peninsula reeks of volcanic gases and the sky is often gray due to fumes and ash released by cinder cones, volcanic fissures, and fumaroles. The lack of plant life leaves a bleak landscape of grays. The bare rock of Malenthrar stands gullied and water worn, as large storms frequently drop torrential rain as they blow up the coast from the south. Geologically active, the land on the peninsula contains remnants of old eruption events everywhere.
Primary Population: None
Secondary Population: None
Minor Population: Fire Goblin
Climate: The tropical climate produces hot weather year-round while great storms blow up the coast from the south, delivering great volumes of rain in short periods.
Wildlife: Despite the ample rainfall, few plants live on this peninsula. Frequent volcanic eruptions kill off much of the new growth, while most wildlife shuns this area due to the noxious gases which fill the skies.
Humanoids: The Malenthrar Peninsula seldom has humanoid visitors due to the hazardous environment. A few adventuring parties of fire goblins brave the dangers of the peninsula to gather obsidian.
Monsters: The presence of dangerous fire loving creatures living at the sites of active volcanic eruptions. Magma elementals often ride down the flanks of volcanoes during large pyroclastic flows. Salamanders and lava children prefer to inhabit active calderas, where pools of magma provide the kind of hot fiery environment they prefer. Danger also lurks in dormant and less volcanically active areas as significant numbers of lava drakes inhabit the peninsula. The lava drakes are worshipped by the fire goblins who visit the peninsula, so they leave them alone.
History: The Malenthrar Peninsula did not exist prior to the Great Cataclysm. During the great calamity a large area off the southwest coast of Beorlan began erupting underwater and eventually formed a large island. A very large eruption 193 years ago formed a long causeway that connected Malenthrar with Beorlan, transforming the island into a peninsula.
Today: The land is tectonically active with constant small eruptions occurring nearly everyday. Every few months a larger eruption will strike but these seldom last more than a few days. Small earthquakes rock the peninsula everyday, but most are mild.
